  • Looking for a 95-98 3800 Firebird or test car

Hello All, I have been looking for months for a 95-98 firebird with a 3800 and an auto for a test car. I am not looking to spend much, bad motor or trans is fine within reasonable mileage from northeastern Indiana. Heres the deal, I am pretty active with the W-body cars and 3800 drivetrains, especially transmissions. I built my 86 cutlass up with an L67, supercharged 3800, and really have been wanting to get an F-body to do the same to so I can put together kits for topend swaps or complete engine swaps. The automatic is definately my choise of trans as I specialize in building them and also a manual isnt going to last long with a built engine. I have a number of people interested in seeing the finished project and I dont honestly want to buy another car, but if I do it will be for a test mule only and then I am selling it. The FIRST one I build will be FREE LABOR to whomever is willing to allow use of the car, parts will be the only cost which will include some custom made parts. The roots blower really makes a rwd car fun to drive, and I ran a 12.21 the first time at the track with some port work and a moderate sized cam and pacesetter f-body headers. I will be baselining the car before and after and possibly with engine mods after. Well I think I have said enough on here, if no interest I at least would like to find a reasonably priced car. NO convertables, hard top or t-top only. Thanks in advance!

Re: Looking for a 95-98 3800 Firebird or test car

I may be interested in a 3.4 car, but would have to be really cheap is it would be more work than I am interested in as I want a stock 3800 to start with for baselining. Thanks for the heads up Viper, I already have tuning support for 97-98 and as I understand the 99+ cars had drive by wire correct? I am trying to stay away from that for this one unless someone knows if an LS1 dbw throttle body would plug in and work properly. 98 and up is when the body changed a bit for the firebird unless I am wrong on that, and if that is correct wouldnt that also be the same as a 99 and up body? What is the difference since you said there is more room? Sorry for the questions, the only work I have done really on F-body cars has been LT1 or LS1 cars. Thanks!

yea your assumptions are pretty good. Thing with the 98s is that they went with the airlid setup like the 99+ cars, however still had the angled tb and drive by cable. All the 99+ cars are straight tb, and drive by wire

As for the room comment, I don't notice any more room in my brothers 99 engine bay over my 97 engine bay.

well it all depends on what you need out of the car just a body and motor and tranny versus te whole car, the body is not mint by a long shot it isnt toast but its got bondo, its a 93 auto firebird let me know exactly what you are looking for and we can try and work something out might be able to deliver if you pay for fuel and time email me at tiresmoke76@aol.com even if you are remotley interested

Re: Looking for a 95-98 3800 Firebird or test car

The car feasably needs to be a 3800 car, 95 to 98. I need it to be this to start with so I know exactly what is needed to do a swap so I can do a writeup for installation instructions and dont want to have to change from the original engine if at all possibly so I have a baseline car. I also dont want a trashed body, the body needs to be in good shape. I also do not want a 99+ car because I dont want to deal with the drive by wire setup just yet. Thanks

Are you wanting to buy a car or just needing a car to "borrow" as a test, providing the parts and labor free because the owner is letting you use as a test?
I have a 98 bird that I'm in process of swapping in another motor as the other is knocking.
