  • Hello from a new member

    Hello to all,
I am happy to have stumbled on your site.
My priorities are God, family and motor sports. I have worked on open wheel dirt race cars for years. After many years of Saturday nights at the track, starting the summer of 2008 I actually didn't have a car to work on and actually turned down a few invitations. Since family (a 9 year old daughter and a 13 year old son) I had pretty much limited any participation to Saturday nights unless there were special (crash or blow up) circumstances. Once I got past the Saturday afternoon skin creepys and stuff I actually got to liking having some weekends off in the summer. As I will explain I found myself back in a routine that involved our Firebird and my son.
We own a 1999 Firebird with a 3.8. I say we as the car is technically my wife’s car. We gave it to her for a milestone birthday. Unfortunately she had a bad experience in the car right off the bat and just never really grew attached to it (that and as I didn't know after 20 years of acquaintance that she didn't like red sports cars, WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!!!). Now that our children have gotten way too big for the backseat, it seemed to end up in my stable.
Now that the Firebird was little more then a luxury it was decided it should be sold. I liked the car but no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get my wife to take a shine to it. She would rather drive her little soccer mom van (if she heard me say this she would definitely hit me and she grew up with brothers if you know what I mean).
I told a drag race friend of mine we were selling the car and right off he said I HAD to make a few timed passes before it sold. Well you know what happened from there? It seems a little of that passion (my wife calls it obsession) for motor sports started to show itself. We made as many Saturday night shows as we could. By me I mean me and my 13 year old crew chief. After getting a little taste of the bracket racing thing we were talking about a different car. You know a V8 with more horsepower and the like. But you know we started doing simple things to the car and the times started going down and my reaction times going in a respectable direction we actually won a few races. I am thinking we will go as far as we feel like with the old Firebird before we graduate if we ever do. Our car is quite stock other then some improvements to the stock air intake and we stumbled on some substantially smaller (circumference) rear tires. We are in the high 15s and working on it.
I will be picking some minds here. Our mission is to spend as little as possible. Not just because I am cheap but because the cars I have worked on for years cost so darned much. You know $40,000 for a 7-10 night engine that requires about $4-5000 to freshen. It costs $20 to race this bracket stuff and $9 to get my son in. If I can manage to go 4 rounds I get my $20 back. One night I paid attention and got lucky enough to win a reaction time contest, which funded some 7 nights of racing (not including the gas).
It looks like the old Firebird will be around so I am sure I will be back.

First off I guess I need to appoligize for being too long winded. I will not let it happen again.

The car has some 95K so it isn't exactly a spring chicken.

I don't think I will do much this season anymore as there are only 2 more point shows and a gamblers race.

I did find an interesting fuel additive that made claims of better overall performance. So that's all I am doing different for tomorrow. That way I should be able to make some kind of direct comparison.
