            I put on 90% highway miles this past tank and I only got around 360 miles to the tank. How the hell are you getting an additional 100 while possibly driving in the city??

              On a sixteen gallon camaro tank, 450 miles divided by 16 comes out to 28 mpg.
              That is a bit high but if you are driving 55 or 60, perhaps with windows up and AC
              off.

                I believe we have V-shaped 15.5 gallon capacity tanks. Oh well, just saw the recent posts...I will explain.

                This past summer, several weeks in July and August I topped off the fuel tank and drove to Petersburg, VA from CT to see my ex gf. During that time I recall changing the EGR valve, motor was seafoamed, new 02 sensors were installed and basically the entire ignition ( alt, battery, coils ) was upgraded. I also had the clutch changed along with the aluminum vette driveshaft installed. Drained the manual transmission and rear end fluids. 4 new tires were purchased and were inflated up to 44 PSI meticulously in the raw mornings before each trip. 9 hr drives at 55-60 MPH netted me 450 on the average overall. Motor was happy.

                My AC never worked but I kept the new belt on. I had the windows cranked low enough to allow fresh air for my face and I usually left way early in the morning like 2AM to allow the V6 to cruise in very light traffic. Each and every time I reached my ex's driveway the trip odometer read 450 and the fuel needle was touching E but knew I had enough fuel to make the trip to a particular Shell station nearby. I never hammer the motor and I'll admit it takes good discipline to watch your cruising speed to achieve such good MPG's. I have been hypermiling so to speak and it worked for me. I believe these motors were broken in properly by my actions. I read 90% highway miles before, well I'm pretty much 99% highway miles with the 1% of miles being spent reaching and exiting the highway ramps to and from work.

                I won't lie about the 500 miles per tank on the 1991 3.1L Firebird I achieved driveway to driveway during the same long trips to VA back in 2002. I think it had to do with the same attention to detail towards the overall tune up I described earlier or the smaller engine displacement. Maybe it had to do with the sleek body contours and drag coefficients of the Firebird? There are a lot of variables at work here such as tailwinds and less congestive traffic conditions. Todays GPS units may offer insights on YOUR driving habits so let's throw that in. You tell me what you're not doing to help your motor pull top miles and we can discuss this matter more thoroughly.

                Now city driving in my 3.8L still nets me 400 weekly on the fuel blend we have here in the Northeast, yet plenty of cold air for the motor to breathe and expel to make it a lil bit more efficient than consuming humid air during the summer. I don't know much about higher altitiude driving habits or fuel blends in other states but I hope I cleared up some misconceptions here.

                Only my '88 IROC Z28 and '02 SS 6 Speed gets the fuel mileage punishment when I stab the loud pedal. These were meant to be driven! I get barely 11MPG on the 305 TPI and a decent 29 MPG out of the technologically refined GM LS1 so the experiments may continue.

                We are still in the age of cheap gas. You'll NEVER catch me in a Toyota Prius Hybrid!!!

                    My 94 should have 255k by the end of the week. Guess I need to drive more to catch up with you.:P I put 550 easy miles week on mine. 55 miles each way to work and back and 26 mpg. I top it off ( to the gas cap) every time I need to put gas in it and reset the trip meter. I will go 3 trips to work and back (330 miles) and put about ? gallons in it- I don't remember b/c I fill it up twice a week, sometime 3 times. Damn, I hate automatics.
