  • Woo Hoo! Santa came early....

Got a package today. I actually waited until after dinner to open it up.

Yep, a nice brand new Eaton Detroit TrueTrac and 3.73 gears. Should have the Speed Sensor Ring for the 3 series carrier this coming Wednesday.

Hope to have them installed in the next few weeks.

    Ho! Ho! Ho! :D

I initially wanted to buy the parts used to save a few bucks. But after searching and talking to sellers, I decided that I didn't feel comfortable buying these parts used. So when I found a 10% off sale, I pulled the trigger. Saved $50 and got free shipping.

Re: Woo Hoo! Santa came early....

Well, I am getting very frustrated. I ordered the 3 series speed sensor ring from newgmparts.com three weeks ago. First they send the 2 series ring and said its my fault for not telling them I wanted the 3 series. Funny, I selected the 3 series part, they verified the 3 series in the order confirmation, but decided at the last minute to switch the part because it didn't match my VIN.

Anyway, they are still jerking me around trying to get a 3 series ring. If they don't have it shipped by tomorrow, I'm going to just cancel the order all together. I found a used one about an hours drive, and I might just go get it this weekend.

I did find a good shop local to do the install, and I'm pulling my hair out waiting for sensor ring.

                    Agggghhh!

Everything in the picture, Eaton, Gears, and pinion install kit ran $505 from SummitRacing.com That includes free shipping, $11 handling and a 10% discount at checkout. Do a search for their 10% coupon, its good until February if I remember right.

I also stopped at Advance and picked up two quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube 75w90 at about $10/qt.

Have to drain the oil after 500 miles, so I'll probably add a drain plug kit when the rear cover is off to make it easier next time.

LOL! Hopefully, next week the shop will do the install for me, then its off to SSP (Sick Speed Performance, NY) for the PCM mods to get the speedo correct.

The hard part will be driving easy for the 500 mile Ring/Pinion break in period.

I'm really anxious to see how the 3.73 gears make the car perform.

                            Latest update!

Oh yeah, Baby! Parts are installed! Now I just have to wait out the 500 mile break in, and get the PCM updated, and its a done deal.

Ran into a small snag today. The shop called and said the 3 series Speed Sensor Ring cracked while being pressed on the carrier. Oh, Crap! Took about 3 weeks to get one of those. So we discussed the options, and the shop ended up welding the cracked ring, and after installing, made 3 tack welds to ensure if will not come off even if the original weld breaks. I drove over to inspect the work, and it looked great.

So the rear was installed, tested, and pulled and pinion depth changed to reduce noise. Its quiet on acceleration and deceleration, but makes a slight noise when feathering the throttle. Shop said that should diminish with break in. But he also said they will not be as quiet as OEM GM gears.

I can already feel the difference that the 3.73's make even with light throttle. And when I got home, the car went right up the snow covered driveway with no problem. It couldn't do that just two days ago!

The shop worked on the car all day, and I was dreading the labor bill. But I was surprised at it was only $80 more than the estimate, even though the Sensor ring needed repair, and the pinion was pulled a second time for depth adjustment.

Now its off to another shop to have the PCM updated to correct the speedo.

I can hardly wait for the brake in period to be over!!!!!

What was the cost of labor if you mind me asking?

I will hopefully be doing all of this sooner than later.
Did you stick with the stock rear end cover?
