  • I need opinions/help ASAP

I'm stronly considering changing programs...I'm in a health and safety program in university right now, and I am far from enjoying it. I've been involved in sports all my life, and would love to have a career that revolves around them in the future.

I have recently found a program in college that looks appealing for me..."sports mangement"

    http://www.humber.ca/program/14181

^ thats an outline of the course/info, etc... you get interships with amateur and PRO sport organizations.

you guys think that there is a future in this kinda program? I know networking would be huge for something like this...I am close friends with a couple of guys that are pro athletes, and know a few more that are up and coming, that I expect to make it big as well... I think something like that can help me as well. I just don't want to do this and be stuck not being able to pay the bills later...I'm a very competitive person by nature, sports to me isn't as much of a job, as it is an escape. I find when I am involved in them (either through coaching, playing, training) nothing else matters to me, its like life gets put on hold until I am done. Any issue I have is not even thought about until I leave...

what do you guys think? is there a probably future? anyone taking this kinda course?

all opinions are welcome, good or bad...just want something to chew on...

Why not find a more versatile path? If you go business management, chances are you could still get a job in sports management... it would just open up other opportunities for you if you find yourself in a bind.

Sports management sounds like a fun path, but will probably take alot of work to pan out.

Health & Safety probably offers more opportunities and will give you more satisfaction than rolling the dice with something that sounds fun.

Well there would be certain certifications you have to earn or take to be in Sports Management.

It's like majoring in Liberal Studies. It doesn't mean you land a job in Education, Communication, or Management. You still have to past certain certification. And would still need to study some more. For example: Once you finish Liberal Studies and got a degree on it and you want to be a teacher you now have to take Education classes.

If I could take back my education I would have loved to have major in Physical Education or Kinesiology. It would have been fun teaching PE.

teaching PHE would be awesome, but you need to get a university degree then go to teachers college.

I'm finding I can't stand university...to much of this theory crap...Im a hands on kinda guy. I get 60's in the classroom, but out in the field I dominate. Every job I've had I've been one of the best employees at...even summer ones that were related to my program. I worked with people who were getting pure 80's-90's in class, but I walked out with the highest/best review. I'm not bragging, but every job I've ever had has been like this. When I work I work.

I'm not sure that a regular buisness program would open as many doors in sports management, Otherwise why would they have such a specific course? I look at the course outline and it is all sports related stuff. I think I should be able to hold my attention with that lol...

One thing I think I kinda wrap my head around is the likely hood of working with a pro team is not very good...and I'm thinking I might end up getting stuck doing an office job, more so then being out and about place to place doing work.

My biggest fear if I go into this, is ending up at a dead end job that doesnt go anywhere...while it might be fun, making 40g's for the rest of my life will not support my life style. To start low is ok, but it has to have the potential to go somewhere. And that potential needs to be realistic.

I've been there. I used to design air condition frame for large facilities and buildings.

It was the most boring job I've ever had and the people I've worked with are the most egomaniacs. I was so happy to get laid off from there, even though I made a decent living.

I got into Education, but right now the market is dry and the lay offs are insane.

I thought about going back to school again, but I don't want to spend more money. I'm broke enough as it is.

I've been looking at this online classes I could take at Penn Foster College. Under Vocational I saw that they were offering a class in Physical Therapy Aide, which probably pays 12.00 an hour, but it would be something I would love to do. Since I've done Personal Training for 10 years till my gym closed, I thought I could get back to working with people again through this. I'm still thinking about it.

Here's the site: http://www.pennfostercollege.edu/ Funny how they even have automotive classes.

why not open your own gym...you like working out and training? why not open an elite training facility of your own?...would take a year or two to get off the ground, but once its going, I would say you would be doing alright...

That would take a lot of money though. Plus, to lease a facility somewhere and to put together a gym will cost me a leg and an arm.

                      Re: I need opinions/help ASAP

I have two university degrees (bachelors and masters), one College degree and I was a peer academic advisor for a while, so I guess I can speak from a position of experience.

I've heard good things about Humber...in fact, I know a member of the faculty there and he speaks highly of it. That being said, University opens doors that a College degree won't. Many jobs will require applicants to have a university degree, otherwise they won't even consider you for the job...that is the case where I currently work. So I'm just warning that if you go through with this sports management degree and it doesn't pan out for whatever reason, there may not be much to fall back on.

How much time do you have left towards your university degree? If you just started your university program and you hate it, which seems to be reflected in your grades, then maybe it's not such a bad idea to start this program at Humber. However, if you've only got a little while left at University, like a year or two, I'd say stick it out, get your BA or BSc and then consider the Humber program afterwards.

You might also consider switching programs in University if you don't enjoy what you're currently studying. Get into business and write all your term papers on sports management related topics if that's what interests you.

I know people that took sports management when those programs were first becoming popular in College 8 or 9 years ago. I had a friend who loved it, but I don't know that he's gone on to do anything really great with it...I've actually lost touch with him, so I have no clue. But you should know that most of the guys who represent professional athletes have MBA or law degrees.

I'm not trying to sway you either way, but I do think you need to get some more information. Contact Humber and ask them about their program, whether they have placements and where those placements are, etc. Then call those placements and see what they pay and what the opportunity for advancement is like. Also talk to people in the business...ask them if you can speak with professors at Humber who teach those courses or if you can contact recent graduates and find out where they wound up.

If you decide to stick it out in university, I highly recommend contacting the academic advisor in your faculty to discuss your options if you're not satisfied with your current program. They can help you figure out electives and credits and all that if you want to change programs.

Very good advice. My school doesn't have a specific Middle East Studies major... so I basically made one myself. You will be able to show employers that you have a specialty that may differ slightly from your official major.

I am officially International Relations, so I have taken all of those courses. Then I went and studied abroad in the Middle East and continued traveling there on my own. I took all of the courses on Islam and other relevant topics. I am also writing my thesis on Middle Eastern (Oman and Kuwait) foreign policy.

My resume has my major, but then I have a section of notable courses, and another with my thesis. This is what allows you to specify what your specific area of expertise is.

Im on probation as of last year...I should have 2.5 years left, but I am quickly falling behind...probation only allows me to take 5 courses a semester, and I have 7 that I am suppose to take each semester from now until I graduate...I've already fallen back 3 courses now.

I'm not enjoying the program, and I don't exactly like alot of the people in the program (this is a problem, because I will be working with these people afterwards, Only 3 universities in all of Canada offer the program I'm in.)

I'm sick of the university scene...I'm rattled by the fact that exams and tests are based around asking about stupid useless facts rather then real life concepts that people should know, and the "important stuff"....not the stuff that you can go look up in a book, because you would NEVER, EVER, have to know it by heart in the field...

I'm rattled by the fact that I pay over 5 grand a year to go to school, to buy THEIR books...to TEACH MYSELF the material...I pay them, for me to teach me...I seem to be the only person that has a problem with this to...I feel like putting my head through a wall sometimes...

                            sorry for the rant...

I know I would probably never represent athletes, because like you said, the people that do, have a university degree in law.

but I would love to be a scout, for a Junior/college/uni/semi pro/pro team...or be a director that over looks the management of teams, or coach (I coach juvenile AAA now and love it)

This program has 3 internships with it...they place you everywhere from pro organizations to amateur organizations.

I've never been afraid of challenges or hardwork...I'll gladly take that on...I'm a very competive person...
