This is why it's critical to have a Scattershield for higher horsepower vehicles:

I cannot believe that the dude didn't get any shrapnel in his legs.

Kinda curious why someone thinks its funny to tear someone elses car up like that. And Im not sure a scattershield would have helped in that case, seeing as thought he moron didn't know how to burn the tires anyway. You can tell the idiot was making up excuses about not hearing the tires or smelling the clutch burn.

Maybe not his case, but I'm sure there's someone out there that has their clutch on the brink of destruction, and should watch that video before he/she ends up in the Emergency Room.

                epic fail.

agreed with mogobs --- dude didn't know what he was doing. a 16 yr old could get the tires to melt in an ls1 with all that power at hand --- that's just sad.

i thought that was his car? if that was someone elses...they'd be having a **** fit...or atleast I would.

I hate when I hear stories (especially people I know) tell me of when they used to work at dealerships and people would bring there "high end" cars into be serviced, and they would take them out on the highway and do 250 in em...

Hmm...you guys think service guys are bad? I worked with an older fellow who is retired from GM and used to oversee all new arrivals of new cars. He was instructed to take every new car that came onto the lot with 0 miles, put 2 gallons of gas in them and then run the crap out of it per his sales manager's orders. Another friend of mine who worked at a ford dealership was told to do the same thing to all new high performance vehicles i.e - mustags, a few ford gt's they special ordered for customers, harley davidson edition f-150"s etc.

Re: Death of a Trans Am

I dunno but thats what theyre told to do but actually for some engines it is. A really close friend of mine went to NADC and his engine rebuild instructor came from building nascar engines and he taught his students that certain high performance engines needed to be broken in my being run at really high load wot condition to maximize cylinder pressures so that the pressure of combustion forced the upper rings towards the cylinder walls making them seat to each other more effectively without floating and therefore guaranteed maximum sealing. The theory actually is logical in my opinion.

^thats what i was always told. its called PDI (pre delivery inspection) and the theory is that if the car is gonna break, it needs to before it gets to the customer. and normally any major issues will show themselves before the auto leaves the dealership. We used to take new cars and give them absolute hell.

as for the engine, it gets started while in production and idles for a pretty good while. we get the cars with 2-5 miles on them, and they should have 10-15 miles by the time PDI is complete.

When I rebuild an engine, I let it run for about 15 minutes to seat everything in then take it for a WOT run. They usually last longer that way.
