don't let love blind you...keep chipping away at the rents, it'll come...they said they are gunna think about it...give em a little time to think...I know people that were going strong for 3 years...bought an apartment together because they were both going away to the same school....relationship went down the tube and now they are stuck with paying for the apartment together.
Best thing you can do is stay at home as long as possible and make money and go buy a house...I've never liked renting...at the end of the day you are giving up X amount of money and have nothing to show for, and dont own anything...I personally would rather spend a little more paying morgage and own it...

      ^Ditto

Ive been living with my girl for 2 years and we were only together for about, well.. 3 months before that LOL. That part is good as you can see. But I have nothing to show for my years of work. I live in a 1978 POS toothpick vs hurricane park model. At 26, I find it rather pathedic... So now I wish that when I stayed with my mother that I had saved everything I could. Because I would have been worlds better off. So I have to say the above post is spot on, minus the relationship part, because you cannot possibly know how that will turn out.

i disagree, someone who is just starting out and young should not be trying to buy a house with their girlfriend of 3 months.

what happens if they take out a mortgage, and find out its not working out 6 months in? That would be a HUGE loss, not to mention finding a bank thats willing to do that for someone so young without a co-signer (will his parents co-sign? probably not)

what happens when tax time comes? A lot of younger people cant just find $2500 laying around, same with maintence, when renting, if something breaks, the landlord pays to fix it.. not when you own a house.

i would estimate it takes an average couple 15-20 years to pay for a house, thats a long term commitment.

I dated my gf 3-4 years, a couple fights here and there. Moved out with her and it's been hell.

Well I dont believe he means immediatley. Just as he says stick with mom at in the same sentence. So... stay with mom, save for awhile so that someday you may buy a house. And no where in there does he say move with GF. But that of course is how I took it. You could be right and I could be completely wrong. Sorry if I am LOL

you misinterpreted what I mean...buying a house with his g.f now is just as bad as renting...I'm saying he should save his money so that he can buy a house years down the road when it is the right time. I doubt the bank will even give him the money right now (although america is different then here...here it is much harder to get money from the bank to buy a house unless you've been working full time for 3-4 years, or have a pretty penny saved up) By continuing to live at home now, he can save up to buy a house down the road...rather then putting all the money he is making now into renting a house, and in the end when the owner needs to sell it, or do something with it...you have nothing, your kicked out, and you have nothing to show for the years of hardwork that you put in...but thats just how I feel.

And I am not saying that the relationship won't work out...Im saying dont let it blind you...Its ok to go out and buy vacations and all sorts of stuff like that with your g.f no problem...but moving in together, especially when you both still going to school, makes for ALOT of stress, and stuff that you just dont forsee...stuff that you shouldnt be focusing on right now...and as I see it, you will just be digging a financial hole for yourself...

Your parents sound like real whack-jobs.

I would stop taking support from them that will only be held over your head later.

Get an apartment solely in your name and move your gf in for a month before you have to kick her to the curb. And don't have babies.

                      Re: Looking for advice

damn fellas - i leave for new years and come back to some deep stuff here haha.

radracer, these guys are giving you some pretty solid advice, give it some thought and approach things how you feel is best. but definitely believe myself and these other guys in saying that living with your gf (especially of such young age and a new relationship) is a very make or break thing --- it's a whole different aspect of a relationship and you need to be strong to make it work. i lived with a gf for a month or so during college, just between apartment leases i was getting in and out of, and let me tell you it was stressful for both of us, things worked much better once i got my own place settled in again even though it was just down the street. my next move in with gf wont be until she has a ring on her finger first.

and keep talking with your parents instead of trying to prove you can take on everything yourself. once i figured out that my parents would treat me like an adult when i started acting like one, i've seldom had a dispute with them. they may have rules you dont like, but if you put some thought into what you are doing and come to them with your head on straight and "do your homework" as my old man would say, you'll get some slack from them.

bottom line: work with your parents and work on building your relationship before you take too big of steps too fast, you'll live longer that way haha.

eh if you can solve the issue with your parents now...then you should be able to solve issues with the g.f down the road...if you cant solve something like this now...what are you gunna do when you move in with your g.f and you dont like some of her rules? walk out?

                          Re: Looking for advice

Your best bet is to not make any rules. Things worked out great with me and my gf till she tried to make rules. I was like... Uhhh, No. She got pissed. I don't care. I pay the rent as much as she does so that's some bull**** trying to give me any rules.
                          Think about that.
As far as your parents are concerned. If you don't understand the rules they make, ask them.
