Eff Rain-X

A while back I properly applied Rain-X to my windshield on the Buick both front and back.. It sorta worked for a little bit on the front but never did anything on the back, but then it started to wear off, and as it did, it turned into this waxy residue that is now on my windshield thats causing my wiper blades to squeak, skip, and chatter. At first I thought it was the cheap blades I had, so I bought Rain-X Latitude blades (if anything would work, it would be the same brand right?) and they still skipped and squeaked and chattered. So I thought maybe I just had to apply it consistently, and so I filled up with Rain-X wiper fluid. Still nothing, so I tried Anco Contours, and they are doing better, but I think I really just have to get the crap off my windshield.

I emptied the Rain-X wiper fluid for something more basic and I've washed the windshield with dawn 4 times, once with Soft Scrub, once with hot vinegar and water, but the water is still beading like crazy and making my wipers loud and annoying. The water is beginning to sheet in a small area in the center of the blade travel on the passenger side that is slowly growing, but I want the stuff off my windshield and I can't get it off!

Suggestions?

try something like "goo be gone"?...that stuff removes almost everything...spray it on, let it soak for a few minutes, then wipe it off.

Then just stick to waxing the windows 1-2 times a year...makes life easier...

Just rubbed down half the windshield with Goof-Off. It applied like rain-x so I was nervous and didn't do the whole thing, but I will if it works. Anyway, it's dry today so I can't test them out but we'll see.

I got the same white residue crap from rain-x too. I used powdered Ajax to remove it. Wet the windshield, sprinkled on the powder, then scrubbed with an old rag.
Only problems with using Ajax on the windshield is that you'll need to wash and wax the car afterwards. I tried very carefully not to get too much on the body, but a few runs were inevitable. Anyhow, it worked!

I'm now using Rain Clear. I bought it at Walmart for $5 and I like it much better than rain-x. It goes on like a clear silicone though, but lasts much longer.

I've also purchased a few small containers of Aquapel, but I haven't tried it yet. I saw them on sale at my auto body supply shop, but I haven't applied it yet. Waiting for warmer temps ...just incase I run into problems again.

I use to use rainX about 10+ years ago and it worked like a charm , haven't tried it too much anymore, although we have had alot of rain this past week.

ya lol...Ive done it for the past 2 years with no issues...you can tell my car is waxed in the rain...all the water literally sits in beads everywhere...it looks sweet.

I'd take a picture, but most of my wax is gone...I didnt get to do it a second time this year, so Im a little bit lacking for the winter....I can get a picture when I wax this spring though

Goof Off didn't do anything... Scrubbed it down with Comet, which made it worse, then again with dawn, and after that they were much quieter, but dawn always seems to solve it, it's just that it only lasts 5 minutes. My guess is the problem is still there, but we'll see.

have you tried an actual wax remover? Maybe contact rain X and explain the issue to them...they should know how to remove their own product...

I wax mine all the time. Keeps it cleaner and its easier to clean if when it does get dirty.

Wouldn't waxing your windshield give the problems I'm having? Squeaky and chattery wipers?

I've been doing it for years and never had an issue like that. BUT, I dont use conventional carnuba wax either. I use a spray wax (Black Magic or Meguire's) that is a "wax as you dry" so its not a paste of any kind. I should have said that in my previous post.

I will note that my Buicks wipers are pretty slow moving. The static friction just keeps getting the best of them. Maybe I just need something to make the glass have less friction. Because they don't chatter or squeak on high setting when they actually speed up.

Waxxing the windows works great, Ive done it for years!
