  • Buying a vehicle without a title, ?'s

Im buying a vehicle tonight and it doesnt have a title, The vehicle is in Indiana, and I live in Illinois.

Its a 1976 Jeep DJ-5 (retired mail carrier)

My ?'s are, How do I go about getting a title?

Its old, hasnt been used on the road in along time.. Has been a farm vehicle.

I think there was some cutoff point on the age of a vehicle that you can aquire a title, but is it any different since' its two different states it may be weird

I am getting a complete bill of sale.

Heres what the jeep looks like (not the one im buying though, just same year / model )

in WV no matter what state you buy the car in you only need a bill of sale.. but ohio you HAVE to have a title... so it varies from state to state i would call your local courthouse...

Yea as long as they run the vin and it comes back clean and you get a bill of sale i see no reason why you couldn't get a duplicate title. But just call the local DMV and explain the situation. I am sure there is a way to get that thing back on the road.

AZ, you have to claim it a abandon vehicle with no title and have it inspected then cleared through emmissions if required then wait the 30 days for the DMV check and they will send you a title for it. Depends on the state though.

You would need to check with Illinois Secretary of State. If you want to fork over a bunch of cash, google Broadway Title, I think they are out of Maine.

I went to the DMV, and the lady had no idea what to tell me.

She just started printing out forms and handing them to me, Saying, "You'll need this, and this,.. oh and this, and sign here, and send $25 here, and go there, and then go here, and back here, Etc."

After about 40 minutes, I had a 2" thick stack of papers to decifer through.

What I got out of it...

-I need to have the vehicle appraised at a certified car dealership

-I need to take the appraisal to an insurance company and have it bonded
            * Secure bond will be 1.5X the vehicle appraisal

-Fill out a fucck ton of paperwork

            -Send Illinois $$$

-Send Illinois that ton of paperwork

            -Hope for the best

Pick up a NADA price guide and look through it for the title advertisements, usually on the back. The deal with these title services are you basically sell them the car. The state they are in ( I know one is in New Hampshire ) Don't require a title for transfers on cars 8 years or older, just a bill of sale. They never even see your car. They title the car in there state and receive a new title from there state. Then they just send you the new title. Last time I looked it was about $200 or so for this, But no BS putting up with your seller not wanting to file for a lost title.
