  • Do NOT download McAfee update!

Some of you know I work in IT and let me tell you work has been HELL!

The worst virus Ive ever seen is McAfee! We have some PC's that wont even come back up. Dead NICs, task manager, restore, and a hell of a lot more.

    Turn off autoupdate now!

McAfee's temp fix in to copy and paste a temp DAT to a McAfee directory. Thats really simple except McAfee disabled PASTE! Dumbasses

Sorry for the crazy post, I just wanted to warn before its too late

I gave up on McAfee and Norton a couple years ago. Memory hogs that you pay ridiculous amounts of money to update and take up space on the hard drive.

Wow, thanks for the update. Great info.

I also avoid McAfee and Norton.

I have been using Webroot for the past 4 years and have never had an issue with it.

However, I get a huge discount with TrendMicro through my company. I was considering making the switch in July when my Webroot subscription is up. Can any of you give me any advice regarding TrendMicro vs Webroot?

I had a 3 year subscription to TrendMicro PC-Cillin that came with my laptop. Loved it. Was a very simple, yet detailed program that you could keep running in the background and wouldn't slow down the computer (2gb RAM). It caught a trojan that I got from the campus network in no time. Almost renewed my subscription with it, but decided to go with freeware instead. I would definitely recommend it though.

I sell people Norton all the time, but my conscience was never that clear to begin with. I run ESET, it's lightweight, and one of the top rates

This was a crazy day. The college I work at uses McAfee campus wide, total of 4 campuses. It took out at least 60% of the school including student's laptops if they had McAfee and connected to our wireless network. Somehow my computer escaped unaffected.

Here's a story I saw on Yahoo about it.

x2. If anything goes funky I'm all over MSconfig. I also keep regular tabs on how many processes are running. I've been doing it this way for about 4-5 years now and I like gettin my hands dirty every once in a blue moon instead of hassling with another program running in the background day in and day out.

This is a good one. I prefer Avira for home use.

                          Msconfig doesnt apply here.

McAfee is actually great for domain/corporate environments. I just wouldn't use it at home like most other people here.

I just want to say that it is safe to update now. Your computer will use the 5959.DAT. Those of you who are screwed with the 5958: Use a good PC to DL 5959 and burn to disk or USB. Then use safe mode with command prompt and copy the file to the local drive. Then run it from there with the /F switch.

It was all just a false positive, McAfee slowly but surely kept locking down the PC further and further to avoid damage from the non existent virus...

                              Well I guess that's why I don't use anti-virus programs 24/7 ^^
