Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. Some ancient cultures promoted gleaning as an early form of a welfare system.
The group I went with picked 350 boxes full of corn in Belle Glade (near Lake Okeechobee). It will be distributed to needy people in Palm Beach. It was tiring work and we returned home covered in everglades dirt. But the best part was knowing that we did a good thing.:banana:
