Gleaning is the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to harvest. Some ancient cultures promoted gleaning as an early form of a welfare system.

The group I went with picked 350 boxes full of corn in Belle Glade (near Lake Okeechobee). It will be distributed to needy people in Palm Beach. It was tiring work and we returned home covered in everglades dirt. But the best part was knowing that we did a good thing.:banana:

People receivng food from these projects include the elderly and the poor. There were two other gleaning projects in Palm Beach County going on at the same time as ours, so the amount of food we amassed was substantial.

It is also a good way to introduce teenagers from Boca Raton to a side of Palm Beach County they probably did not know exists. Belle Glade is not a very wealthy town. Also, they get to experience first-hand the hard conditions migrant workers deal with every day.

Some of the leftover leftovers (this stuff did not even make it onto the truck with the 350 boxes). My wife will be donating this to a low-income senior citizen retirement community.
