  • Things happen in three's right? One more surgery

So, in 2008 a careless driver plowed into my wife and I at 40 mph - the wifey suffered whip lash - I had to have surgery (spinal fusion) where they removed a damaged disc, put a metal plate, 4 screws, and a cadaver bone in my spine.

2009 I got punted across 4 lanes of traffic by a careless driver - I had to have surgury (spinal fusions) again. They removed the 1 year old metal plate and screws, put a much bigger metal plate in, 8 screws, 2 damaged disc's were removed, and they put 2 more cadaver bones in my spine - now a total of 3 cadaver bones.

Due to extensive damage from accident #2, I have to go back in one more time. Spinal surgery sucks..... but my doctor has advised that this one is going to really suck.

This time they are going in through the back of my neck. They are going to fuse C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7 together - basically, my entire neck. They will drill each disc in two places and put pins in - total 10 pins - and connect them together by 2 metal rods.

My other 2 surgeries were through the front of my neck as there is less muscle etc., but when surgery is done through the back of the neck there is ALOT of muscles.... and I have been advised it is very painful - more painful than my prior surgeries.

I should be going in either this week or next week.

So.... total will be 10 pins, 8 screws, 3 cadaver bones, 2 metal rods, 1 metal plate and a partrige in a pear tree...... ok, maybe no partrige in a pear tree.

This will make a MAJOR impact to my life - when my wife and I finally have kids, I will have difficulty playing with them, I won't be able to ride ATV's or jet ski's. Racing is EXTREMELY doubtful.... if anything maybe a 20 second car.... even that is doubtful as my neck may not be able to support the weight of a helmet. When the weather is cold or humid or both I am in a world of wicked pain.... and only someone who has metal in their body can understand this pain. It is doubtful I will be able to handle performance oriented cars - hell, I can't even handle the ride of my wife's 2010 C-Class with a sport package ?!?!?!

The list can go on and on..... these careless drivers have made a HUGE irreversable impact on both my and my wife's lives.....blah.

All I have to say is.... be VERY careful when you drive.... watch out for @ssholes and DON'T be one.

Wow! I pray that everything goes well, its complete bull**** that you have to live with these injuries while people everywhere else take it for granted. I almost lost it when I read about what they are going to do. I'd be a nervous wreck right now.
Your ability to keep a positive outlook is beyond impressive. The world needs more people like you.

Remember, right before they put you under the gas, look em in the eye and say "Screw me up and I WILL find you!". :P

I may have to have rods/pins/screws inserted into my wrists soon due to a birth defect, and I feel lame now for complaining about it...

I hope the best for ya and stay positive... attitude literally is everything, I've seen alot of pessimists when it comes to any decline in their health and it definitely slows their recovery and overall quality of life...

        Good luck!!!

James, I hope everything goes well for you. Don't ever put those things out of you life like enjoying your time with your children, racing, and such. The human body is an amazing thing. If you really want it then have the will for it.

My wife got admitted in the hospital last Tuesday and she's still in there. She had renal failure. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later because she's taking 34 medication a day for her heart and they are dehydrating because of water retention. We thought her kidney was done for, but her will to live and to be with me is strong and she's slowly bouncing back.

Good luck james, Thor hope your wife gets better. I'm seeing the Cardio Dr. on the 2nd , to set up my heart surgery. Then will have my back fixed. James I don't know if my pain is as bad as yours but after 3 years now doing pain mangement , I'm taking 240mg. of Oxycotin a day along with nerve blockers and 2 types of muscle relaxants total pills a day would be about 30-35 depending on the day. The spascity from the stroke has my left side either just sore and cramping or I have spasms. They are suppose to do my lower back S1, L4, L5 and fix a birth defect where I'm missing 2 bones and stop the detieration of the discs. What sucks is they have to go through my stomach to get to my back.

But like you James my worst fear is I won't be able to do anything when there done, they mess something up or they find something worse. Good luck with the surgery. Things do happen in 3's , I had a stroke, found out had a birth defect of the heart and then birth defect in the back. LOL

Van , police academy is basicly common sense, listening and physical condtioning, if your in shape and can follow commands without stressing out then you'll do fine. Good luck

best of wishes james. shoot man, i couldn't even imagine how you are getting through all of that. I don't even know what to say really... that crap really has put a damper on a lot of the stuff you seemed to like doing. I hope this surgury is your last, and you and your wife make as complete of a recovery as possible.

Thor, i wish your wife the very best as well.

It pisses me off, that you both seem like quality people, yet cannot seem to buy a break. Once again, i hope you all are on the road to recovery as soon as humanly possible.

Come to Oklahoma where the average speed limit is 20 over and blinkers somehow are always optional. Its no wonder why we have the 5th highest insurance premiums.
