For a shotty, shorter barrel means the shot will scatter sooner. Less effective range, but more likely to wing an attacker at home defense range. Plus, shorter barrel is lighter and more maneuverable.
Thanks. I think the Mossberg I bought has an 18.5" barrel. I'm sure it's legal in CA because I bought it from a reputable dealer, and licensed gun shops can't sell illegal firearms or parts.
By the way, does the length of the barrel affect the way a gun shoots? (Sorry if this is a dumb question. As I mentioned before, I'm a complete newbie to guns.)
Is a longer barrel better or worse for home defense?
18.5" is good for home defense. A longer barrel gives a tigher/smaller "pattern" (the spread of the buckshot) at greater distances, whereas a shorter barrel is much more maneuverable and easy to handle in a home defense situation (such as when moving through doorways). A hunter or target shooter would prefer a longer barrel, between 26" and 30", for engaging targets a bit further out.
If anything a short barrel would slightly increase the amount of muzzle rise after each shot.
^^Haha. Lets just say it was a killer deal that couldnt be passed up ;) I've been eye balling them for almost 8 months and this was the first one I've seen used. Its a TON of fun to shoot so much so that I actually like shooting it better than my modded AR-15.
Canadians need not apply. :D
I have a souped up mossberg 500 tactical shotgun with collapsible butt stock, pistol grip, side shotshell carrier, (Not pictured...tactical flash light, and front pistol grip)
Its pretty bad@ss, I also have an old school 6 shooter (oh yeah cowboy style!) Sentinel Deluxe I got from my dad... an SKS converted to an ak-47, and a glock 19. As you can tell, my favorite is the shotgun, which I nicknamed the zombie slayer! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!
