I'm pretty sure there are sensors in the road to activate some traffic signals. If you have a small car, or the sensor is old/damaged it may take some adjustment in the traffic lane to trigger the light change.
Thats what they have here, you have to pull up far enough to trigger the light or sit there and wait until the time expires. During the day though their on a timer so it keeps traffic flowing better. I know some roads I can hit eveylight for about 15-20 miles going through the city , becuase they are timed for 45-50 MPH.

It's a big problem for motorcyclists... Those sensors detect changes in the electrical field, so if you commonly come to a light and have to wait forever for it to change... get some neodymium magnets and put them on the bottom of your small car or motorcycle and it'll detect you right away every time...

When I had my GSXR , esp late at night , I would just stop and go if there was no traffic or police around. LOL Never new that about the magnets , thanks for the info.
