1992 firebird advice

    1992 firebird advice

    goin to look at a 92 firebird tomorrow and i dont really know much about these 3rd gens... so any advice or what to look for would be appreciated...

    i know its got a 3.1 v6 with a 5 speed...
    ran the carfax and its clear..
    said the power windows and locks work...
    the t-tops dont leak...
    said it has 105,000 on it mostly highway...
    said there arent any rusted body panels and that its already been sanded and primered for a fresh paint job...
    also that the a/c WORKS but doesnt blow super cold... maybe just freon??
    oh and that it needs a dash pad and center console to be perfect on the interior..
    hes asking 800 but will prolly go down cause its been for sale for a while...

    i know theres some 3rd gen guys runnin around here and was just wondering about things to look for tomorrow when i go look at it...

    Good choice on the '92 !! I just bought a '90 Formula 5.7 TPI. I had a 1991 Firebird 3.1 in high school. The biggest thing to look for with a 3.1 is any coolant leaks. My car had 190,000 miles on it and both heads cracked, but that was probably because I was 17 at the time and beat the living hell out of that car. The dash pad and center console normally crack or break on a third-gen, so nothing to worry about there. Parts are cheap on eBaymotors.com. Also make sure that the headlights work properly and there is no major grinding noise coming from the headlight motors. If it's a '92, it should have a motorized suck-down hatch. If that is an important feature to you make sure you check that. Your A/C probably needs recharged but being a 1992 model it may use R-12 instead of the modern R134-A. R-12 is illegal from what I understand.. don't know?? I have a few cans of it around the garage somewhere.

    Otherwise you are buying a good car and IMO third-gens are better quality than 4th gens when it comes to just about anything. 105k is low miles for a '92 so hopefully it will have been a car that was taken care of. Keep us posted. Later...

      Auto part stores sell retrofit kits, to make a r12 a/c system into R134a

          800 is a steal if it is what he said it to be. From what I know there's really nothing to worry about with the 3.1. I know that earlier 2.8 had issues, but those bugs were worked out with the addition of MAF.

            first off, thanks for the advice... went and looked at it yesterday and it was ALMOST as good as he said... haha typical craigslist deal though...

            mechanically the car was super sound... ran really good and the transmission was super tight... would need some kind of exhaust... had nothing hooked up to the manifolds... and would need something on the intake... had no air filter whatsoever... just the plastic piece coming off the throttle body... no idea how long its been like that... pretty peppy little engine though...

            the interior was just what he said, cracked dash pad and missing console lid... carpet would just need a good cleaning and none of the seats were in bad shape... would also need a headliner... didnt have anything on the interior roof... just straight metal...

            exterior wise was a little worse than just needing a paint job... everything WAS straight with no rust BUT it would need to be completely resanded and primed and the front bumper would need to be reattached better... also NONE of the lights worked for some reason and the headlight motors were stuck in the up position... a set of rims and tires wouldnt be a bad idea either... tires were shot and the rims were pretty nasty lookin...

            so im kind of unsure how big a project i want to get myself into right now... i figured id offer him like 400 for it just for sh*ts and giggles and see what happens... haha

              It sounds like Mr. Backyardmechanic didn't know what he was doing.. There are a lot better 3rd gens out there for $800, especially one with a V8. I didn't think there was until Vanbibber pointed me to the Dayton, OH craigslist!

                They are pretty inexpensive, They range from 25-80 dollars i'd say, depends on what you get.

                some are just new fittings, some are fittings with seals, some are fitting, seals, new oil and freon.

                    nah bro... after doin some serious thinkin, i decided to hold off and keep my eyes open for something better needing less work... just really dont have time for another project right now.. haha
