I just bought my wife a Nissan Rogue 2 weeks ago. It is an awesome vehicle.

I've been driving a 2005 trailblazer for about 2 years now and its been a great car. So far I haven't had one problem with it (knock on wood) and its got about 103k on it now. As for mpg, I'd say it ranges from 17-21... So not terrible.

My parents have a 2009 ford escape but I'm not really too sure how that does for gas. Its a little bit smaller than the trailblazer. I think they've been pretty happy with it so far.

whatever you do, do not buy an HHR. My dad his and it's been in the shop 7x. He's the original owner, and the car has 11k miels on it.

I would look at maybe getting a hatch like a mazda3 or something of the sorts.

          Isn't the Mazda3 a small hatchback car?

There's not a lot of room in the back hatch area of a Mazda 3, unless you can remove the rear seats or fold them down. But I'm unsure whether they can do that. The rear space in a friend's Mazdaspeed 3 was terrible and couldn't hold much.

I'm sure it's a nice car but doesn't sound like it will do what she needs it to do.

Btw, that is the second person who has told me not to buy an HHR. The maintenance technician at my work has an '08 that has been in the shop for all sorts of problems.

Just a suggestion.. When my "ol woman" was looking for a new car we looked at the HHR and similar vehicles and she eventually bought a Dodge Caliber.. I was at work when she did so I could not talk her out of buying it, but the longer we've had it the better I like it. It does fairly good on gas but she has a lead foot so I can't give you a "normal" mpg. However, it might be kinda small for what you are looking. Just my $.02

Hyundai Santa Fe... it's my wife's suv and it gets great gas mileage and the reliability is great, plus the warranty. It has 120k now and not a problem with it.

My wife moved up from a Cavalier to an Equinox after her accident. It was relatively inexpensive, gets 30 mpg everywhere, seats adults comfortably, and the seats configure to about as much space as you need.

x2 on the santa fe... but also, the place my parents work use the HHR's as delivery vehicles and they've never had any problems, they've got like 7 or 8...
