  • Another sign my car is 10 years old - the spare tire died

So today I open up the spare tire compartment to get my jumper cables to help a co-worker start her car. I look in there and see the spare tire is coming apart. I'll have to get a new spare. I'm glad I gave the person a jump start - it gave me a heads-up that my spare tire is dead. Better to find out this way than when I had a flat tire and needed the spare.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Thats a shame. My car is also 10 years old the spare is still in good shape, never touched the ground.

You keep the spare in your car??!!

Kidding, it's good to have emergency equipment in the car for when you need it.

Knock on wood my bird turned 12 yo last month, but it was built in July and I have never used the spare nor the oem jack. But last I check when I replaced the cable of my auto antenna the spare was good.

My car is 15 this month and the spare looks great, obviously never used. The Florida heat probably had a lot to do with your spare coming apart.

What spare tire, mines been sitting in a garage for 4-5 years now. LOL I did have my nitrous bottle in mine and then I was going to do the batt. in there then the methanol injection but they look good sitting down below in the hatch the subthump box for that side though fits perfect. I like to run good tires and when they look like they are going I replace them so I have never in almost 15 years now been with a flat or a blow out on the side of the road, knock on wood. LOL

That little spare has helped me out of trouble at least twice in the past ten years. My Firebird is my only means of getting everywhere - so yes, I keep the spare in my car.

My spare tire also played an important role in several Boy Scout Automotive Maintenance merit badges (my car somehow survived those episodes with no visible damage).

Mighty Thor - I've replaced my power antenna also. That was a very easy repair. I found out there's a reason why those signs say "lower your radio antenna before entering the car wash." :o

Your posting phrase made me laugh out loud. My 3800 is almost 11 years old. Since March of 2010 I have put $3,000 into her for some engine work and just this week a fuel pump replacement (figgin' expensive I might add). If all you've noticed in 10 years is a worn out spare, you're really sitting pretty!

Fuel Pump replacement is going to be expensive if you let them fix it. Because they would need to drop the rear end and the tank. But if you do it yourself by cutting a hole at the top and relacing it from there you would've saved yourself a lot of money. It's not that hard either.

I did the cutting and bought the pump. I paid a mechanic to do the actual fuel pump replacement (which was not that tough - I watched him.

Old thread but Ill post anyway; I last used my spare coming back from Orlando (picked up an RS kit). Luckily I stopped next to an air pump. As soon as I let the car down it went all the way to the rim (I couldnt even get the jack out LOL).

Very clean cutting! What did you use to do it?

Dremel cutting wheel FTW! It think it took two or three cutting wheels. It created a hellacious shower of sparks. I was very carefu about cutting in the areas where the fuel lines are located - there was about 1/8" inch of clearance between the sheet metal and the fuel line.

If I had to do it over again, I would have cut the opening wider.
