  • Proud new F-Body owner

The bubble at the top of the forums keeps telling me to introduce myself, so I guess I will!

The name is Taylor, and I'm a student working as a martial arts instructor for the college. Doing what I love to pay for my degree, it works well. I live in rural Oregon, at the end of a long winding country road up in the mountains. I had a beater '89 Ford Ranger since I was 16, and the thing needed to be put out of it's misery. I wanted something that would tackle the mountain roads with gusto, so a Craig's list raid netted me a very clean '97 Firebird with just over 100k miles, bone stock.

Within a week I had the cooling and ignition system overhauled with heavy-duty gear, and a hi-flo cat and a custom madrel cat-back system built by a friend who owns a muffler shop. My baby purrs, and I'll have pics of her to put up soon.

I plan on modding her with mostly bolt-ons, as money allows. The next two mods I have in mind for the foreseeable future would be a cold-air kit and a more aggressive computer chip, but unfortunately it seems a lot of the 97 f-body stuff has been discontinued. Any suggestions on where I can pick up an idiot proof cold-air kit and computer?

EDIT: I needs new shocks, too. I'd like something that can handle a gravel road without rattling my teeth out, and still corner nice on the switch-backs.

Welcome! Be sure to get those pics up of your bird when possible. Sounds like it's a perfect choice for those mountain roads.

Regarding the chip... get that thought out of your head. Jet chips and other types are a joke and often cause more trouble than they're worth. You should look into getting a tune. Since you don't really have a need to spend the coin on a tuning program like HPTuners, I'd recommend you look at a tuned PCM swap program like PCMforless does.

Shock-wise, post up a thread in the Suspension forum with your budget and goals and we can help you figure out what will be best for making that thing handle those mountain roads like a champ without jarring your ribs on the gravel.

      Welcome

Like said, if you are staying with just bolt ons, i would look at PCMforLess.

As for as springs, strano for handling, hotchkis for decent handling, but better ride IMO.

Ive had no luck with pcmforless. I've gotten 2 97 swaps from them and both wouldnt run.

IMO, stay away from them. Try TSP for tuning instead.

Any links for TSP? Google isn't being helpful.

Got the pics up. The car is a little grubby, but as I said, I live on a dirt road.

Not so much brave as lacking in options, being a poor college student. If I had my way, it would be a 5-speed blue or black Trans Am/Mustang GT/Camaro SS, not a white auto :P.

BUT, since I have it, I'm going to make the best of it. It'll be the quickest and most nimble V6 I can make it with my budget, and drive it until the doors fall off.

he has a 97 though, shouldnt be a problem. PCMforless s a very reputable company. All his choice though

For a 97 you ended up with the 93-94 wheels. Other than that it looks great.

Do you by a guy name Tad? I forgot his real name, but he goes by that nickname and he currently lives in Oregon with his 2 daughters. He's a Kenpo Karate Master and last I heard he has a studio up there.
