      labtop?

Thats silly. A computer that sits on your lap is a "laptop".

You get what you pay for is correct.

Back in November 2005 I purchased a very nice, high quality Sony Vaio AX Digital Studio pc laptop. It rated nearly a score of 10 from techy nerds who wanted to use more than 3 USB ports, complaints about its noisy cooling fan etc but all that didn't bother me at all. It was and still is a fine piece of art in my opinion.

Anytime I had trouble with it, which was rare, the customer service was top notch, spoke perfect English and gave me solid confidence in their product.

So overall I'm more than happy with it in the last 5 plus years of ownership. These Sony Vaios cost around $2000 - $2250, you divide that over 5 yrs and it's definitely worth spending on the quality. :)

My only gripe about this particular model is the heat generated on my thighs. It's hot as a 1500 watt blow dryer and certainly heavy but I'm looking forward to refinements from Sony.

Good luck in the $450 department, spend what you think is gonna fit your needs. Technology always gets cheaper in the long run, that's for sure.

hey man take it from me...that heat is bad for your laptop...i had a hp that went that way and the motherboard fried...try to open it up and clean out the fan and all the dust out of the heat sink..it should be done like every 6 months...

              Re: Best new laptop?

It's probably worth noting that the two laptops I mentioned cost about 5-600 new, so not much out of your price range, still with excellent quality. Of course, it's worth mentioning that I hate the Fusion finish on my laptop. I'm not sure if they still do it, but it gets fingerprints all over it constantly. I actually ended up clear coating it with satin paint, and have now repainted it several times because the paint can't hold up to the abuse. But I still prefer it to the fingerprints. That's not a reliability issue though, just an annoyance. So stay away from the glossy finishes if you can and if you care.

I had a toshiba satellite and it was junk, maybe these guys have better models than I did. I now have an HP laptop and it is really nice, 8 gigs of ram, 750 gig hard drive, the works. But it cost me more than your budget. But HP makes nice laptops.

I may up the amount I'm willing to spend. I appreciate all of the comments so far. Mixed reviews on the Toshiba puts a damper on things..

Does anyone use a Sony Vaio?

You'll see mixed reviews on all laptop brands. Last I heard, most laptops are similar in overall quality according to Consumer's Digest with HP and Toshiba leading the pack by a hair.

                      Re: Best new laptop?

Working in IT here. Ive been through enough computers that Im pretty sure Im radiated.

Pretty much any new laptop on the shelf today will do what you will use it for (and do it well). So your really in the market for tech support and quality... They all suck :)

Ive seen all brands of laptops die, mostly Acer, Toshiba and Dell (I've seen more HP). Ive seen some horrible designs (Toshiba and Dell). And Ive seen only one that truely honors their warranty... HP/Compaq. Ive been through and seen HP outlast them all, and when I do have to RMA one here at work, they will take it back. Its still a painful process, but at least you actually get taken care of (eventually).

As for tech support... I heard Toshiba and Dell are good for this. But Im not too sure on this as I dont exactly need any tech support.

Have had great luck with my two compaq's. First one I used for 3+ years, $350 new at BB. I still have it but decided it was time to buy a new one. I had my screen go out(partially my fault) but it was replaced under warranty within the first year.

Just bought a $330 dollar compaq about 3 months ago. Can't complain whatsoever..

I work at Staples selling computers and honestly all these laptops these days are so similar they might as well be all the same brand. In my opinion look for one with either an intel i3, i5, or an AMD dual core. Go with at least 4 GB of ram. HP computers seem to be well built as are Toshibas. I bought a Sony Viao last year and I love this thing. It was $650 at the time but runs like a champ and still looks brand new.

Thank you everyone for your input! We ended up buying the $379 Toshiba that I was looking at. This thing is fast and serves its purpose. Lets hope it will last a long time :)
