  • Well I might be Camaro-less...

    Long story guys and gals:

I recently picked up a 97 Z28, 102K miles, M6, t-tops, stock for a good price from a dealer. I was happy and started to do small repairs and modding it slowly.

    So far I've replaced/added:

    Borla adjustable catback($250 off ls1tech)
    LED interior lights
Refurbed my console and bought a M6 shift console in decent condition
put my C6 ZO6 rims on it from the 3.8
    replaced the hatch struts
    replaced the waterpump
    bought a ebay cai
replaced the window controls and door bezels
bought a replacement t-top headliner from a member on here
replaced the clutch and 3rd gear synchro

Basically; it was running fine and I was loving it. I was in a good situation, the car was behaving just as I wanted it to. However, I have been having shifting problems with it lately such as I can't get into reverse with the car on and it does grind sometimes when going into any gear. I knew it needed some work eventually but didn't think much of it. I dropped it off at Circle D Transmissions couple days ago, got a rough estimate at 3k tops for a complete tranny rebuild!

I've been considering my options from trading it in somewhere to see what I can get for it or just holding onto it as I can still drive it fine. But eventually the tranny will completely break down and render the car useless.

The 3.8 has been mistreated, I admit it. I couldnt handle giving two camaros my full attention,I don't know how guys with two girlfriends do it. Since I've gotten the Z28 it has just been parked there collecting dust and now won't start, prob battery or something. But I can't rely on it for daily usage and it also nickles and dimes me to death. Also recently my girlfriend scratched the driver side fender pretty bad when backing out of the car port. All in all I guess I just don't want to deal with the 3.8 either.

I've considered trading in the Z28 and selling the 3.8 locally somewhere and just cutting my losses and get into something dependable that I can do payments on. Probably a late model Honda Civic or a Silverado

If you were in my situation, what would you do? What advice can you guys give me as a fellow f-body lover?

I know where you're coming from, in my opinion would sell locally..(Should you decide to sell) and move on the muscle car and get whatever, Civics and etc last forever, as do chevrolets trucks.
    Wait, Is that a V6 or V8?

why not look into getting a transmission from performabuilt? You can get em for 1200-1400$, which is a far cry from 3 grand...I had my tranny rebuilt here for 1200$ with a couple of beefier parts put in and put my stall converter installed (not bought for that price, just installed with the transmission)

I would just drive the car as is for now if you can and save up a little for a performabuilt...or go to a couple of transmission shops...or pick up a used tranny off LS1tech.

Honestly, our prices are ridiculous over here, so if I got my trans pulled, rebuilt, beefed up a little and installed for 1200$, then you should be able to get it done for atleast that much or less...

Why not pull a t-56 from a junk yard and install it yourself rather than have that one rebuilt for 3g's and then keep the car.

I did not include this in the original post, but I am going to shop around a little before I call it quits. Getting a used tranny off 'tech or a junk yard isnt a problem. But my know-how is not up there enough to do a tranny swap yet.

Letzride, thats a crazy good price for your transmission job. Was that just the trans price though and then you installed the transmission your self?

Doing a tranny swap is really quite easy, If you've done a clutch on your car then you can do a tranny swap.

The clutch was not so bad because I borrowed alot of tools and did it at a friend's house in his garage. I followed a write up as well for the clutch. but I suppose if I manage to get a decently priced replacement tranny then I'll prob attempt the swap myself, its just complicated for me since I live in an apartment and don't have the workspace.

Yea well Id say if you have enough skill to do a clutch a tranny wont be an issue. Borrow tools and bite the bullet, do it in the parking lot on jackstands.

probably how its gonna happen lol.

any good place to find a decently priced used t56?

I'm checking ebay, craigslist, and TA Creations, won't be able to check out junkyards until this weekend.

I had my trans rebuilt for 400$ at a local shop. Most places quoted me 4-600$ for a rebuild.

Gotta bring the trans to them though. If you can at least pull it out and put it back in, a good shop can rebuild it for you cheaper. They probably quoted you taking the trans out, rebuilding it and putting it back in.

Hmm I never thought of that, it is indeed extra work for them.

Man guys, I was ready to give up and succumb to a regular car lol. But now I have a good feeling that this is just another "simple" fix.

actually the shop charged me 300$ for the uninstall/reinstall of transmission, and I believe my torque arm at the time...so 1500$ total

My girlfriend said it best one time when we were in Toronto at a ballgame and had car trouble with the Firebird.

A Kia Soul pulled up to the light and she said "things could be a lot worse you could be driving that"

I said at least its reliable, she said "do you want reliable or do want cool,I wouldn't be seen dead in that appliance it looks like a toaster".

What a women,we were made for each other:)

Fix it and love it because an FBody has a real "Soul":)
