I recently picked up a 97 Z28, 102K miles, M6, t-tops, stock for a good price from a dealer. I was happy and started to do small repairs and modding it slowly.

        So far I've replaced/added:

        Borla adjustable catback($250 off ls1tech)
        LED interior lights
Refurbed my console and bought a M6 shift console in decent condition
put my C6 ZO6 rims on it from the 3.8
        replaced the hatch struts
        replaced the waterpump
        bought a ebay cai
replaced the window controls and door bezels
bought a replacement t-top headliner from a member on here
replaced the clutch and 3rd gear synchro

Basically; it was running fine and I was loving it. I was in a good situation, the car was behaving just as I wanted it to. However, I have been having shifting problems with it lately such as I can't get into reverse with the car on and it does grind sometimes when going into any gear. I knew it needed some work eventually but didn't think much of it. I dropped it off at Circle D Transmissions couple days ago, got a rough estimate at 3k tops for a complete tranny rebuild!

I've been considering my options from trading it in somewhere to see what I can get for it or just holding onto it as I can still drive it fine. But eventually the tranny will completely break down and render the car useless.

The 3.8 has been mistreated, I admit it. I couldnt handle giving two camaros my full attention,I don't know how guys with two girlfriends do it. Since I've gotten the Z28 it has just been parked there collecting dust and now won't start, prob battery or something. But I can't rely on it for daily usage and it also nickles and dimes me to death. Also recently my girlfriend scratched the driver side fender pretty bad when backing out of the car port. All in all I guess I just don't want to deal with the 3.8 either.

I've considered trading in the Z28 and selling the 3.8 locally somewhere and just cutting my losses and get into something dependable that I can do payments on. Probably a late model Honda Civic or a Silverado

If you were in my situation, what would you do? What advice can you guys give me as a fellow f-body lover?
Cut your losses on a 13 year old car. Get a pick up truck, save your money and get something newer.

mine is on its last legs, i figure once it gives out ill just point the rest of the car at a phone pole and call it finished.

No I was actually thinking the same thing. If you got that far then instead of putting your old tranny in replace with new one?????

Oh and just to rub it in I blew my tranny and got it replaced for $200. That was after having them throw in vette bands and servo. $300 if you throw in the ungodly oversized tundra I got for the week. Gotta love extended warranties.

I didn't read the whole thread, but 3K sounded insane from the first post. Just swap out your trans, why rebuild? They're pretty cheap at junk yards. Just get to know a good independent mechanic/shop, the smaller the better. Make sure the person you're dealing with is trustworthy or hang out at the shop while they work.

Re: Well I might be Camaro-less...

I wanted a reliable place to do it since I don't want it breaking down 2 months later. Circle D is a renowned sponsor over on 'tech so I figured they would be a good choice. I guess they have a big overhead or something.

Went to another shop and got a tranny rebuild quote for 1500 with a year warranty/60000 miles.

Dude as someone said, if you changed the clutch you have to take the tranny out pretty much. I don't understand how you could possibly not have confidence. Just imagine you're doing your clutch again, but when you reset the tranny put the new one in.

Cause you would be getting a like new trans instead of an old one that already has near 100k miles already.

For 4-600$ why NOT rebuild? Thats cheaper than a new trans and your pretty much getting a trans that'll be good as new. *shrug*

They're not that hard to find from cars with way under 100K. It is harder than finding an automatic though, because A4's with next to no miles on them are dirt cheap and easy to find. The T6 is harder to find, so I guess it depends on the price / chore of finding the used one you like vs getting a rebuild. Either way 3K is too high which was the point of my post, he wasn't talking $400-600, he was talking $3k. The 1500 quote he got is much better.

Unless its on your car. Then it requires ruining your roomates brakes at the same time.
