I love American cars, and try to buy them when I can for political/economic reasons, but unfortunately it's hard to argue about the quality. In my experience, Japanese cars tend to run for ages, and European cars are better appointed. American cars used to have Muscle as their strong point, but I havn't been terribly impressed with...anything...lately.

maybe the older stuff, but the new fords/gms seem to be a lot better quality.
there are tons of people on these forums with over 200k miles on their fbodies. the main problem with domestic cars are the interior quality, which has greatly improved in the passed few years.
the UAW is a huge reason why the quality suffers, these workers are getting paid so much more than their import counterparts, which means the auto manufacturers have to use cheaper parts to compensate for it, or raise the price of the cars, and i dont think there are many people out there willing to pay $25,000 for a base model aveo or cobalt
because of the quality issues, people arent willing to buy domestic anymore because they *think* they are built with the same quality as they were in the 80's and 90's
i for one dont care about the interior, the interior in my camaro is so much better than the ford i have, its not even funny
Thanks for replying sanely, a lot of people get heated over these discussions. My first car was an oldsmobile achieva, so you might be able to imagine my disillusionment. Granted, I'm not exactly well off, so most of my automotive experience has been with 80s and 90s vehicles, so the situation could well have improved :)

yeah.. i dont know much about the new chryslers, but i do know that the gm/fords seemed to vastly improve around 2005 or so
in my immediate family, we have 5 cars, 4 chevys (69', 85', 98', and 02') and one ford (98')
skipping the 69', the 85' is somewhat decently built, but the iron duke is so under powered its amazing.. but it might be because im used to higher power cars.. same with the ford, that thing cant get out of the way of itself. trying to drive with the ac on is just terrible.
my camaro has a better interior than my fathers 02' impala IMO. the entire interior is plastic, and the dash constantly makes a cracking noise like a softball sized rock smashed the windshield at 70mph. the camaro isnt as plastic-y.. or at least doesnt feel like it as much. the only problem with that is the stiff suspension makes the interior rattle when i run over an ant.. but its not even comparable to the ford, if i turn the music up a bit it sounds like there is a birds nest in the backseat.
a friend of mine just bought an 08' ford focus, its a nice car, but not as good as a expected.. but it is also a focus. only problem with it is the material the seats are made out of.. i dont know how to describe it other than a cheaper computer chair. if you get a stain on the seats, its not coming out without scrubbing it for hours, and since the dash is completely black, the ac sucks in the summer, the cold air gets heated up from the vents under the dash and even cranked full blast its not comfortable on days that are over 85F
sorry, with all the epa restrictions and osha standing over them,i just dont think it will be as good,,,but we can keep a happy thought,,,,definatly need something like this on tv,,,,tired of all the damn reality shows
the brits roadtest astons and ferraris,,what are these guys gonna do real roadtests on?,,,smartcars? prius?,,,like i need to see more roadtests of vettes and camaros? just my opinion
