  • Radar Detectors, Instant On Radar & Performance

    I wanted to post a test video of how police radar works and how radar detectors perform. I thought this would be interesting for some of you that use radar detectors. I'm guessing there are plenty of us out there since we're into sporty cars.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICUbJye2Zqc&fmt=22

    The video shows how Instant On radar works from stationary and moving mode. Then does a comparison between what used to be a mid-high end cobra (2 or so years old) and the current top of the line valentine one unit. This video demonstrates that an old or low quality radar detector could be too slow to catch fast bursts of radar. Some radar detectors need the bursts to be as big as 4+ seconds, but we were able to acquire speeds with our test radar unit much faster than that.

    Doesn't your detector going off indicate you've already been clocked?

    Even if you have a couple extra seconds warning, does that give you enough time to slow down?

      it goin off means somebody was clocked.... might be a guy a half mile down the road.... 2 sec is the difference between home-free and a nice ticket...

        @sac2165

        What venom3300 said is basically the idea. If a cop is up the road tagging people say every 10 seconds for 1.5 seconds at a time and you're half a mile down the road, you will get a blip on your high end radar detector and slow down. If you are alone on the road for miles then you are screwed either way.

                @RPDRed6,

                I'm glad you liked the video. I think the video shows why everyone hates on cobras. They under perform their competitors and many of their models can't see Ka 35.5GHz, even from inches away. All detectors perform worse on 35.5 than other frequencies, but Cobras have no performance on 35.5 unless you have one of their recent models. Cobras are also poorly shielded and emit RF interference. This is the reason Cobras are the most detectable radar detectors. In testing Cobras can be detected by Spectre III (rdd, radar detector detector) from 2000+ ft away, that's how ridiculously leaky they are. This leakiness is very annoying to others, because they cause false Ka band alerts for high end detector users. It's extremely irritating to slam your brakes then see that someone with a Cobra was next to you causing a false alert. I usually take out my hand held K-band gun and give the Cobra user a blast of K-band away so they can crap their pants like I just did.

                Also my video explained why you get saves with a Cobra. You can get saves with any modern radar detector if you're paying attention and not driving fast through twisty mountain roads. So long as the police are using constant-on radar, most police use constant-on radar because they aren't targeting radar users. They're targeting the general traffic and those that aren't paying attention. Often cops don't even hide, there are plenty of fish out there. However you will get a ticket from a cop using instant on if you use a Cobra, because he's doing that specifically to catch radar detector users.
