  • Buying a beater.. maybe, probably, possibly!

We've been through so many cars in the past two years that it makes me sick just thinking about it. I sold my Z28 two years ago for financial reasons. Her '02 Cavalier was totalled in an accident. My '06 LaCrosse was traded in on her '07 Civic. I bought my '00 Camaro. I also "impulse" bought a 1990 Formula which I later realized I didn't have the time for and sold it to a buddy.

My intentions at first for the '00 Camaro was weekend, play status. Unfortunately it turned into my daily driver for the past few months. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, but a round trip to work is just shy over 60 miles (probably less miles than some of you may drive.), but more than I am used to.

I managed to save up a few bills and started my search this morning on Craigslist. I need FWD for the winter, preferably a mid-size or full-size car. I am not a truck or SUV guy, so we're not going that route. I also have around $1,500 to work with and tax + title fees have to be included.

So far I have found a few choices...

My first choice that I looked at was a 1994 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight Royale, baby blue, newer tires and brakes, 126k, runs good, drove beautifully, needs exhaust replaced, $900/obo

1999 Chevy Malibu, light gold, 170k, tires were okay, needs alignment and the interior cleaned really well. $1,200.

2000 Chevy Impala, dark green, 203k, good tires, good brakes, no a/c, clean condition, $1,500/obo

There is not a whole hell of a lot to choose from in my price range. I had a 1993 Olds Eighty-Eight a couple years ago and it was a great running, comfortable car. We'll see what happens.

go for the cheapest. Slap an inexpensive exhaust on there and you're golden.

a neon...then we can be buddies...j/k...don't get a neon, this thing sucks balls...just drive the camaro, put some snow tires on...I never had a problem...infact I usually laughed that on big snow storm days half the fwd guys were getting stuck, and I was trucking away fine... Only time I've honestly ever got stuck was when I parked the car and a sheet of ice formed under both tires...I'd put the car in reverse and not even touch the gas and the tire would be spinning already...not much you can do about that... As soon as I get my motor back in the camaro, I'm ditching the neon and on go the snow's onto the camaro...If I can do it, you can definetly do it.

Not to mention my car will see multiple trips to both new jersey and rhode island this year...

I've seen regal GS's go pretty cheap around here. Thats what I'd be lookin at if i were looking for a FWD sedan and had 1500$. :D

if the impala is a 3.8 i would get it, if it is a 3.4 i would only get it if the intake gaskets have been changed... or plan on changing them.

i wouldnt touch the malibu.. but out of all of those, i would get the olds 88

I see plenty of lesabres going for around that price range when i was looking. I have snow tires for my park avey (which i got for 2500, definitely wasn't the cheapest one I found) but it hasn't snowed yet this year so I'm not sure how it will do. Being fwd it will probably be pretty good.

Century's are cheap as hell, I found a 95 with a bunch of options and 90k in salem for 1500 bucks.
