    went to look at a 79 ta today. it had no tranny :(, but had a complete 71 455 except for carb. i'm thinking of buying it and it comes with a 12 bolt posi. cons: need floors(what do you expect), and has minor other body rust. perfect for a body man like me. what do yall think?

    How's that 455?

    If the price is good I would hit it.

          it should, 71 was one of the last years before all of the major emissions stuff started happening to the engines.

            71 = about 370hp

            79= about 200hp

              yeah, 455 has more hp and tq. than 79, BUT which ever one you get you can definately build up that 455 to a hot rodder motor mouse. There's lots of aftermarkets for it. My neighbor back then had the 442 Olds with the 455 and that thing is a monster. It does 9 sec. at the track. Forget the 427, just go for that 455.

                Good find,Year One will have new floors you can order.

                79 Birds didn't come with a 455,they had 400ci Pontiac,a 403 Olds,a 301 Pontiac or a Chev 305.

                The 455 will bolt right up if it came with a 400 or 301.

                If it was originally a Olds 403 or 305 car you will need the motor mounts but the bolt holes are there.

                  The 455 Olds and 455 Pontiac are entirely different engines.

                  Both have lots of aftermarket support still although the Pontiac has a bit more.

                    I knew a guy who put one of those 6.5liter V8's out of a T/A into a stingray and it was pretty damn fast.:bowdown:

                          The 455 is a good engine. No reason to put a Chevy engine in it. You'll need a tranny with a BOP(Buick, Olds, Pontiac) bell housing though. That shouldn't be difficult to find. If you get it for a good price it would be a fun car to drive. Is it a T-top car?

                            Pics? Price? I couldn't see spending more than $1000 on this thing if it's as much of a basket case as you lead us to believe.

                              Well right now im really not looking to restore it just have it be ugly with a fast as* motor. heres the link to the car. my buddy knows him personally though. http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/2011712678.html

                              im thinking about just welding an old hood to the floor until im ready to restore it
