  • I need your help regarding the future of my Firebird - serious thread

I'm at an important juncture and I'd like some of your opinions.

My Firebird's engine has been having increasing probvlems over the past two years. It has gradually developed into symptoms and conditions that indicate some significant internal problems. I've got 195,000+ miles on the car, with the original engine.

Without goiing into more details (I'm not looking for mechanical diagnosis in this thread; I want opinions on what option you'd take), I'm at the point where my choices are:

    A. Sell the Firebird and buy a different used car. I can't afford a brand new car. The engine is definitely running poorly so I'd be selling a car that has obvious mechanical problems. This limits my market to gearheads and salvagers instead of the broader market of car buyers.

    B. Put the Firebird in storage somewhere and fix the engine somewhere in the future. My two sons are not yet of driving age and really would like to get their hands on the Firebird when they get old enough. I'd have to scrape together a bigger downpayment and probably get an even cheaper replacement car than option A.

    C. Pay a mechanic to go inside the engine, find the problems and repair the problems. I'm not particularly excited about this choice because there have been increasing issues with the engine, simply because it is old, having been used a lot, often not just in "easy" conditions.

    D. Buy a used engine and pay a mechanic to replace the engine.

    E. Buy a new engine and pay a mechanic to replace the engine. I don't know if I can afford this.

My car is not a racer, just a daily driver that has taken me to and from work in lots of heavy, start and stop traffic for the past 11 years. In addition, I've driven it hard sometimes and also used it a lot to take me to camps (read: off-road driving) all around Florida.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good.

Seeing this from your kids perspective, I think they would love to have the car.

I inherited my Camaro from my grandparents when I was 16. (I'm 17 Now).

It's a great first car, F-bodies need a lot of work so naturally; I've learned a lot!

I would suggest finding a used motor, its probably your cheapest option without a "band-aid" fix.....

Perhaps the kids wouldn't mind helping and learning if you hinted they might get the car in the future. Maybe include them in the engine swap?

With 195k miles on it, I'd say you've reached the practical end of your car's life. You could spend increasing amounts of money to keep it on the road, but at some point its just not going to be worth it.

I'd move on to another car with less miles.

Id consider throwing a reman engine at it. In the long run itll be cheaper than buying a new/ used car and once your son's get of age, they could possibly buy it from you and in the meantime you have a daily driver with a new motor.

I'm going with swapping in a used engine, its cheaper than your other options and you get your moneys worth plus still have a car to drive.

If it were me I would tear into the engine before I spent any money. It may still be cheaper to put a low mile used engine in it though. You can usually find grand prix engines easier than f-body ones, and just swap over your top end and maybe oil pan.

                C. have a mechanic go in and just rebuild the engine, also I woul upgrade some parts while its apart, then you'll have a nice running engine, I had mine rebuilt at 119,000 miles with upgraded parts and 60,000 miles later it runs like brand new and quicker. For parts a small cam , L32 rods, clev. 77 bearings , COMP OE lifters, COMP 5/16th pushrods , Manely retainers, Comp 105 Springs , Manely retainers, Viton guides, and replace all parts worn like timing chain , oil pump an pickup and FPR. Then you'll have a fresh engine and some more HP out of it and it will last along time wothout any major problems.

Put a used engine in it. I got my L26 for my 'bird from LKQ on ebay for $300. It has 63k and cost $225 to ship. Cant rebuild one for that and it should have 140k left in it.

                      This ^--

I've rebuilt everything in my car in the drivetrain and it renewed my love for the car.
If you love your firebird and has sentimental value, Keep it and fix it.

It's cheaper than another car payment and then be put in the same situation, later.

Just keep it. Firebirds are becoming rare now. I only see one once a week. And it's difficult to find one that is in great condition.

It would cost you a lot to rebuild your engine. You best bet is to buy a whole engine with less than 70k miles on it. I've seen a couple of them in ebay that goes anywhere from 300 to 400. A mechanic may charge you 400 - 500 to take out the old one and put the other one in. If you have the tools you can do it yourself.

Hmm... I've been looking for a clean Firebird with a blown motor for a project. But I think you should stick with this one.

My advice: Look for a lower mileage newer 3.8 (series 3 seem to be pretty affordable) from a junkyard or LKQ. Then have a mechanic swap it in. Or... see if some members close enough to you would be able to help with the work and swap the engine over yourself.
