  • Is a V8 swap cheaper than selling/buying yet?

With the coming of christmas and thanksgiving break from school, i'm finally going to have a chance to get the camaro back on the road. spun rod bearing... was originally set on just getting an l26 and dropping it in. However, I've always wanted a v8. So do y'all think the value of the v6 and the price of a v8 (lq series) have dropped enough to make it more economically viable to swap rather than sell and buy a v8 car?

I'd be swapping from a bad l36+good t5 to a 5.3 or 6.0 truck motor + t56. A very extensive swap, I know. But a new v6 will be ~500-600 including breaking it down to put on new gaskets. And our cars only sell for ~3000 on a good day. So that's around 2500 or net profit from selling. Decent v8's range from 6 to 7.. so I'd have to fish out 3500 at least.

Would a t56, truck engine, v8 kmember, rear diff, radiator, ac, pcm, etc cost more or less than 3500? brother has a formy he's slowly modding, so there are a couple parts I could use from him. factory exhaust stuff, ls1 intake, etc.

It depends on how much you can do yourself and what you can buy a v8 for. It's probably easier to go with an LS1 swap.

i think i could do all of it myself. and why would an ls1 be easier?

The LS1 is easier because there's alot of stuff necessary to make the LQX engines compatible with our cars. None of the front accessories will work. You will need the LS1 CAMARO (not corvette) relocation brackets, The Water Pump, Alternator, I've HEARD the 3.8 Power Steering pumps can work but not sure on this... and that alone is going to cost almost an extra $1k. you will also need to tap/drill the alternator thread for the upper alternator bracket/bolt into the block...

Then you will also be responsible for finding a compatible computer and wiring harness as the truck harness will not work on an F-Body...

There's also other things like the oilpan and windage tray... so there's more to it than just swapping the engine. The LS1 will actually be $1k cheaper than even the 5.3L swap, the only reason to do this is if you want an engine with lower miles, or more displacement.

I would agree with Need4Camaro. Our cars were designed for the LS1, so you know it's going to fit without a ton of modifications. Plus, it's got plenty of aftermarket support. So, you'd be getting a powerful engine, minimal headache, and a good upgrade path by going the LS1 route.

Buy one with an LS1 in it already. I've seen GOOD LS1 cars go for around $5k. I have a swap car. But with what I have into the entire car, I could have done the same buying a cheapo LS1. A factory LS1 car will have less headaches.

ls1 f bodies that are not special (meaning a 2002 ss' with 5,000 miles) can be had for very cheap now a days.

its cheaper to drop a carbed sbc in a 4th gen than it is to drop an ls1/lsx in

If you can do most the work yourself and go with a 5.3 block then id say itd be cheaper to swap.
