  • Decisions... decisions.

Okay, I recently had my Camaro inspected by the mechanic I use when the job is too difficult or my knowledge is not up to par. The rear main and oil pan gasket both need replaced. The quote came out to $600-700.

The car is also STILL in need of a driver side power window motor, new stereo (cd player quit working), all new speakers (trashed), and a new exhaust from the cat on back. The single outlet factory exhaust is still on the car and the muffler has a small hole.

The positives about the car... It cleans up nice, never been in an accident that I'm aware of, interior is like new, crisp & tight steering and suspension (almost like a brand new car), the tires and brakes are newer w/ roughly 18k on both. The fuel pump, radiator and a/c compressor have been replaced within the past two years.

In order to repair both oil leaks, the window motor and replace the stereo equipment, my estimate is somewhere between $1,200-1,500 for everything.

This is a 2000 Camaro with 120k miles. I might be lucky to get $2,000 or $2,500 out of it for trade-in providing the dealer doesn't inspect the vehicle. If I sold the vehicle outright, as-is to a private party, I'd image I would fetch the same amount.

What is my best option here? Do I put the money into the car or take a loss and move on to something else. Something with an LS1 perhaps... :stp:

V6 or V8 doesn't matter much to me as I don't drive reckless. My insurance is extremely low with the multi-vehicle discount. But if I bought another mullet mobile, I would opt for an 8 cylinder this time. Oh, and I also wanted to mention that purchasing a new vehicle would require a 36 or 48 month loan, something I do not have right now.

Just keep checking the oil, as long as your not loosing that much, you'll likely be fine. Fix your power windows yourself or find someone who can, even if you sell it a buyer would notice a broken window regulator right away and you'll appreciate having it when you need it. Forget the stereo, they never really improve the sale price of a car as much as you spend. When you can't stand the muffler, have that fixed or find some of that muffler glue-tape guano stuff.

I have done all of this to my 94 Bird and it now won't pass emissions inspection. I found a 01 T/A v8 6spd for $9k. Just don't need to payments. Probably get maybe $1k trade in if I am lucky. To bad it has t-tops.

                    Re: Decisions... decisions.

I vote fix it. Even if you doubled your sale price and bought an LS1 car, I bet your list would be just as long if not longer.

                    Mine would be:
                    LS2 Flywheel
                    LS7 Clutch
                    All hydrolics
                    Random interior parts
                    Shocks
                    Pads
                    ABS block

I say your in pretty good shape....

Window motors can be done in a couple hours, just take your time and remember how they came out. If I can do it, anyone can!!! and Im being serious, not cliche.

while you got the doorpanels off for the window motor, you're gonna removing the speakers to give yourself room for the motor, so replace them while your at it with some KEE replacement speakers. all this can be done by yourself, and would be a good reason to buy yourself a nice xmas present, maybe a new in dash too ;)

                        Re: Decisions... decisions.

If you're not big on music, go to a boneyard and pick up a set of stock speakers out of a car and get a cd deck off craigslist. Window motor would be about 60 bucks for a nice one with a lifetime warranty and I can replace them one in about 25 minutes. It will be a bit longer if it's your first time. If you need to drill out the rivets (very first time being replaced), just print out the walk through and you'll be good to go. If it's a regulator, that's a bit more in depth, but still totally doable.

If you don't care for a new exhaust, just patch up your muffler; there are all kinds of products for this. As for the rear main, see if you can find a buddy with a lift and some nice tools and do it yourself, it's really not that involved. The best I could do was a mechanic friend of my dad's, whom, since I helped with the process, only charged me about 100 bucks. My oil pan gasket leaks a drop every now and again, but it's not worth pulling the engine imo, so it stays.

                          Re: Decisions... decisions.

Hmm..im in the same boat as Bibber on this one. Let's see where should I start.

Just had transmission rebuilt with a 3000 stall after tearing the forward sprag to pieces - 1350
Need new rear axles bearings and seals. Pass side is gauled(sp?) from the bearing going bad on a previous owner and they just replaced the bearing so it makes a slight noise.
Need new lifters. No 8 Intake makes a horrible tick noise that I can adjust out some but its still always there.
Need to replace all a/c. Previouse owner removed all except evaporator core to save weight (was going to be a pure strip car before they ditched the project).
The bracket they made to hold the ac delete pully rattles so it must be loose.
                          Needs new plug wires.
                          2 window motors
                          Several suspension bushings.
                          New exhaust manifold gaskets.
                          Soon to need new tires.
                          T-tops leak slightly.
Def needs new paint. Its chipped in every other spot and its so thin you can see the red primer under the black at night with a light shining directly on it.

After all that the one thing I am glad I can say is my interior is imaculate besides the drivers seat. Being it was an Ohio car originally the body does have a few rust spot underneath including a hole about the size of a quarter in the back floorpan just behind the pass seat. But I got the car for a whopping 2100 dollars when it was all said and done and it ran consistent 8's in the 1.8th with the tranny not shifting right and a factory replacement 1200 rpm stall from Advance auto parts so I was happy. Plenty fast and MPG isn't all that bad at 18-19 even with the cam thanks to my Innovate wideband a/f gauge and my tunercats software. Also retuned the shift points so it should do better at the track now along with the 3k stall that was installed. Just chipping away at it little by little as I get the time and cash and she's my DD.
