    Here's the story...

My uncle is a Catholic Priest, two years ago a family who recently moved to Ohio from California had donated their 1989 Volvo 740 GLE to the church. The church used the car for running errands but it mostly sat for long periods of time in the garage. Last year, my uncle donated the car to a family down on their luck and they used to the car to get back and forth to work. The family recently dug themselves out of their hole and gave the car back to the church. The church doesn't want the car back and my uncle more or less asked me to sell it for whatever I can get and take $100 commission, scrap it at the recyling yard or keep it for a beater.

The local auto recycling is paying $245 per ton and the car weighs roughly 2,800 lbs. I believe.

Here is what I know about the car...

The odometer stopped working three years ago at 207,500 miles
The trip odometer does not work
The gasoline gauge does not work
The heater works but the fan bearings squeal
The abs light comes on when you hit the brakes
There is a clunk in the right rear when making turns
    Rear hatch does not open
    No headliner
Hood won't release unless you pry it with a flathead screwdriver
broken marker light housings (need replaced)
may need alignment (wobbles at low speed)
    Ugly as sin.

    Good stuff:

    Runs pretty damn well
    Shifts pretty damn well
    Radio works
    a/c works
carpet and seats will look decent when cleaned
good amount of tread left on the tires
    brakes are ok
Rust free, straight body from California
above average paint for a 21 year old car

I don't quite trust this thing, but I heard that old Volvo's run forever. I believe it is rear wheen drive and I'm not sure how well that would do in the snow.

    Opinions???

My high school auto shop teacher has a beat-up old volvo that he's trying to put a million KMs on... He has like 600,000 or something on pretty much original everything.

    So they do run forever...

I guess it would depend on how readily available parts are in your area?

If the power-train and body are in good condition I'd say its worth keeping!

Put it on Craigslist at a reasonable price. They're safe and are tanks that will last, perfect for a new driver.

or just put it on craigslist for like a 1000 bucks and sell it, then give the money to the church seeing as it is their car

Paint it orange, jump it, then recycle it.

If I sell it, I get $100 commission and the rest goes back to the church. If I keep it, I have to pay the scrap value.

I'm not going to "keep it" and then sell it for profit. I would feel like a thief.

Forget about the 100 commission. Just give that to the church. That's just me ofcourse.

I would try and fix up those issues and then sell it for a reasonable price. Since craigslist is free I would start there.

That would be all fine and dandy, but I at least believe $100 is worth my trouble for dealing with tire kickers all day. I've already had two people look at it, and both expected the car to be absolutely perfect. I hate selling cars, I really do.

Friend of mine has the exact same vehicle. It is a tank, it is RWD, it'll probably live longer then you, and with some weight in the back its amazing in the snow, with the proper tires of course. That being said, parts such as calipers are difficult to find, and they are butt ugly.

Ater a lot of consideration and bickering with my wife, I bought the car from my Uncle for scrap value ($342.40). :D

Ever since I ditched my super awesome Buick Lacrosse to help her fund the Civic Si, I've been through an old Firebird which I bought on impulse, and an '04 salvage title Impala. I had the car 3 days before the transmission completely dropped out. I was thankful to get my money back and move on.

So anyway, this Volvo will come in handy when we move to our new house in January, and it will serve it's purpose when the snow hits again. The car needs a few minor repairs which I'm going to work on after Christmas. So far it needs new headliner fabric, front marker light, RTV the weather stripping around the the sunroof, vacuum and steam clean etc...

By the way, I had the rear main seal and TCC valve replaced in the Camaro for less than $800. I'm happy to have it back! I even drove it to work this morning.
