  • My Firebird has been hit...

Happened coming home after my 3rd 12 hour day this week. Rear-ended on an overpass. I seen him coming fast in the rear view, and I simply had no where to go, so I let go of the wheel about a second before it happened, and there he went.

The guy was a Polish immigrant, driving a BMW X5. There were patches of ice everywhere on the overpass, and I did see him try to stop. Honestly its better he hit me than try to swerve out of the way into oncoming traffic or something. I got out, we were both fine, got his info, and left. Didn't bother calling the police, no sense in it. I got his number, he has mine, so I'll give him a call about the accident, see what he can do to make it right, if he even does. Honestly, I was cold, tired, and at a point now that even if I did ask for the money for insurance, I can't do without the car for any period of time, nor do I want to deal with a rental. I love the car, but I just don't give a ****. Not even pissed, more happy to be home.

My car on the other hand has a smashed passenger tail light, and the hatch will no longer stay closed. I opened the hatch to get my tools out, and the latch is pushed too far forward to reach the hook on the hatch, so now I have to figure out how to get it to stay closed. I called my friend in Indy, and told him that I need my Monte Carlo back by the end of next week, which he's been tinkering with it for the last year now. Ive come to a point that I need a new car, something practical, preferrably a truck. Difficult to buy anything right now, simply because work is a week to week thing during the winter, I can't afford to buy something and then only work 40 or so hours the next month.

Sorry to hear about the Firebird. Having to get repairs done on your primary car sucks. Especially with the Monte still sitting at dude's place. :(

Hopefully you'll have time and finances to get the Firebird fixed properly once this is all sorted out.

Yeah, it's horrible out there esp. in your neck of the wood. Glad to hear that nothing bad happened to the both of you.

Hope you get your bird fix. But you know it's always good to have a police report just in case this guy pulls a 180* on you. I've had that happen to me before. I had this girl hit my side one time and she didn't want it to go thru. her insurance and she agreed to pay for my damage. So I didn't bother to call the police or file a report. But she filed a report on me and did a switchorooo. Lesson learn.

Re: My Firebird has been hit...

I managed to get pics, and his insurance info, but I never gave him my insurance info. Personally, if I never get it fixed, so be it. Ive been using it as a work vehicle, and it simply can't do it anymore. I keep two bags of tools, three large boxes of material, a spool of 6 Ga. grounding wire, a sawzall, my roadside kit, my large clipboard, my worksite radio, all while driving it hours a day, racking up 24,000 miles a year on it, during long commutes in bumper to bumper traffic, on ****ty Chicago roads in. Its been taking a beating. I never meant to have it as a DD, but with the Monte broken and the amount of money needed to get it fixed, its damn near impossible to get it fixed without sacrificing a bill. Only choice I had was the Firebird, and I have seriously abused it.

I called my guy to get my Monte Carlo fixed. Its sat for over a year with no work being done to it, but Im just not fond of popping $1200 on that car over a timing issue or transmission fix. I never had a problem working on the Firebird, and I may keep it even after I get the Monte Carlo fixed, but I just hate working on the Monte. Its a complicated engine, with too many specialized tools needed to get it working.

Should just sell both and get a truck....

I don't have the space, energy, will power, or heart to part out the car. If I did sell it, Id sell it whole, to someone I know. But its not really on the table at the moment.

And after taking a look at the rear, I noticed that the hatch itself is actually split at the seam. I got inside the car, with the hatch up, and laid down on the topside of the gas tank, and kicked the rear of it back out enough to get the hatch to latch and close. But after I closed it, I looked and seen that the hatch itself is now split, so thats even more money to throw away fixing it.

The only reason I kept this car was because the body was in great condition, now thats out the window. If I can find the space, id like to fix it.

I think its more than cosmetic or superficial damage. The problem I had was with the two bags of tools back there (almost 200 lbs) the car was weighed down pretty good in the rear. It was almost as if it was dragging. Because of that, he really didn't hit the bumper, but the tail light and panel square. He managed to dent it enough to push the latch in, so Im not sure how much of it I can fix until I can tear it down. Its why I HATE apartment life.

Thanks for the offer, I'll let you know once I have time to tear into it.

With the way you drive you should buy a truck. You have a ton of tools sitting in a sportscoupe thats just crazy! Just sell both and get you a Silverado or Ram 1500.

Trucks have an imagine for being versatile vehicles, but honestly my firebird tackles the ice and snow far better than my '00 Ford Ranger. Even though my truck has a shell, there's been very few situations where the truck was more useful. Like moving an xmas tree or a mattress. I keep all my tools in my firebird as well. Granted, this post is rendered moot if the truck in question is 4x4.

Its good you got his insurance info. Thats the most important thing to get.

I just got tboned last week and my audi is probably totalled. so i know what its like
                        :(

Glad you are ok and the bird is still alive!

I'll be a SOB, but the polish immigrant actually called me back yesterday to ask about a quote. Unfortunately, because I just pulled off a 63 hour work week, I haven't had the time to get one done. So I think Im going to the body shop here close to me to get a quote, so that I can have some kind of proof to give the guy.

Lets see if there are any truly honorable people left in this country, stay tuned....
