This will probably cause a stir but MOST NOT ALL Lt1 people and Ls1 people don't get along. I know a couple Ls1 people that aren't bad but I know a few that if you dare say anything about god's gift to the automotive world they will never let it down. Mostly the Lt1 people get along quite well.
Think of it this way its like the 3.4 and 3.8 people. The 3.8 people sometimes will bash on the 3.4 people, same concept.
Personally I like the Lt1 better, but maybe thats just because I'm weird. That being said the Ls1 has some very good things going for it, one its lighter (all aluminum), much better ignition system, boatloads of aftermarket support, and is completely over rated. I myself would go with a truck Lsx based engine if I were to do a swap, its alot cheaper that buying a ls1 and makes the same power. Also with most of them having an iron block they are stronger as well.
Now with Lt1s you get a bunch of good things too, the low end torque is great, they sound good, and with how many people hate them it has made them very cheap. The biggest issue with them is optispark (the distributor). Opticrap has a very large problem with moisture, basically any moisture that gets too them kills them. The nicest thing about the Lt1 is the low cost, all in all it cost us about 1500 to do a Lt1 swap on the other camaro vs 3k for a Ls1 swap.
My LS1 swap was done for well under $2k. Just sayin.
lt1 is junk, I would go with a carbed SBC before i would go with an lt1.. yeah they were ok for their time, but the ls1 is the better option of the two.
edit* btw where in pittsburgh do you live? I know a few people where you could possible get lt1/ls1 engines and everything for your swap, but how exactly do you plan on getting passed allegheny county emissions and inspection?
All most 99+ cars need is engine/trans/wiring harness/fuel pump. Shop around. An LS1 can be had around $600, A4 trans for $200-300, Fuel pump for $20 for a used LS1 pump, and a wiring harness for around $200. It's not rocket surgery.

maybe in your area, i have never seen an ls1 with trans for under $2500 around here
The only problem I've ever had with lt1s was opticrap, and some oil leaks. My friend has a 94 z28 with over 200k on it and it runs fine, our swapped one is running (although we have to put a new opti on it, our own fault), and my stepsisters z28 is fine at 150k. I think this is everything that would be needed if swapping for a 3.8 car pre 99.
- Ls1
- Ls1 subframe
- Ls1 throttle cable
- Ls1 Pcm and engine harness
- Trans
- Trans crossmember
- Ls1 radiator
- radiator hoses
- I think I remember hearing the fuse block
- Ls1 fuel pump
- Ls1 fuel lines or corvette fuel regualtor
- Lsd
- Exhaust work
- V8 cluster
- Power steering stuff
- Ac lines or just delete it
- emissions stuff
I'm not 100% on that but thats basically what we had to do for the lt1 swap.
I live around pittsburgh area I also need a new rear end, the whole reason i started looking for a damaged car
take a look at jj's automotive, they are about 30-45 min outside of pittsburgh, they have about 50+ lt1/ls1 f bodies sitting around.. anything you would need, they will have.
