dont ask me for reasons to get a lt1, because i cant think of many lol. they do run for goddamn ever though. ive put mine thru hell and back and it still runs very well. you can make a nice boost motor out of them, but other then that, i can find no other reasons.
current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it
The only problem I've ever had with lt1s was opticrap, and some oil leaks. My friend has a 94 z28 with over 200k on it and it runs fine, our swapped one is running (although we have to put a new opti on it, our own fault), and my stepsisters z28 is fine at 150k. I think this is everything that would be needed if swapping for a 3.8 car pre 99.
- Ls1
- Ls1 subframe - Cheap $50 or less usually
- Ls1 throttle cable - Cheap $10 or less
- Ls1 Pcm and engine harness - PCM $50, Harness $200
- Trans - A4's are cheap $200-300
- Trans crossmember - Cheap again, $20 for an A4 crossmember
- Ls1 radiator - Don't need it with a 99+ V6 car.
- radiator hoses - You can make your hoses work, or new LS1 hoses are like $30
- I think I remember hearing the fuse block - WRONG, you need to jump 1 wire on the left side harness
- Ls1 fuel pump - Stock take out for $20
- Ls1 fuel lines or corvette fuel regualtor - Corvette regulator for $35
- Lsd - Not necessary
- Exhaust work - eBay stainless longtubes $150
- V8 cluster - Not necessary
- Power steering stuff - Yeah, you do need the LSx style pump
- Ac lines or just delete it - You would need LSx ac stuff
- emissions stuff - DELETE!!
I'm not 100% on that but thats basically what we had to do for the lt1 swap.
If you want to go NA I'd go LS1, but if your thinking of high degree of forced induction with forged internals then LT1.
I don't go by which engine is better anymore. It just depends what your goals are and what you do with it.
I've been to the track and I've seen turbo 4 bangers dominating the track. I've seen some wild V6 do well too.
Grumpy Jenkins once tuned a Chevy 4.2 V6 into a 457hp NA track engine. So anything is possible. No such thing as the absolute single best engine out there.
that and after driving many others; nothing I have ever had or driven compares to my LS1. Not even close. Parts galore, good prices too. Easy as hell to work on; seriously look up a head install and compare it to others. Responds to mods realy well. Huge community; LS1tech. And of course performance :D
As for a swap though, Id stay 3.8. I love those little motors :D
If I would consider it though, an LT1 would be on the list of possibilities. All depends on price and how far Id want to take it.
I might have to settle for a lt1. I have 2000$ to spend. I have found alot of 93-97 fbody v8's for around 1500 but i can't find any 98+. and i doubt i'll be able to put all the pieces together for under 2000.
I'm not really depressed. I would rather have an ls1 but lt1's aren't terrible. I can't save up more money cause i am currently in college and the only reason i started looking for a new engine (new car) was because my rear end locked up a few weeks ago and i need to replace it cause i really need my car back.
whats wrong with putting 2000 into the v6...if done right you'd be faster than an LT1 with that money...
That's just silly. Jeffy (which makes me think of Johnny Knoxville's retard character) why not just get a $200 used rear end. Check the local postings on LS1tech and find one near by you. If I was in your shoes, get it driving, sell it, buy a cheap LS1 and have no headaches. Swap cars tend to be finnicky, which makes me pretty grateful to not have to rely on it for transportation.

Still trying to find oil leak on my Camaro, it’s a tough one. I think it is the oil pressure sender myself. Leaking when raving and going into boost....
