  • Chernobyl: Its on my bucket list

I've always been fascinated by the Chernobyl disaster and the fact that there is a HUGE abandoned city and land all around it for 20+ years. I was doing a bit of reading around on the internet for it and came across both this page, and this incredible video in which a bunch of guys went walking around in Prypriat with a helmet cam and recorded over 15 minutes of urban exploration. I love it, anyone else?

Heres the web page with story and pictures:

and heres the video (Its like 17 minutes long but ABSOLUTELY WORTH the loading wait, wow

There is a show on SciFi called Destination truth and they did a overnight Ghost investigation at That place. It was very scary.. Dont know if those are some of the videos you posted of it or not as I cant check them from work but if you get a chance you should check out that episode..

Clearly, it all happened because the guy from MW2 got his arm shot off.... and then the shooter took down another helicopter with a sniper rifle... DUHHH. Everyone knows that!

But seriously, it sounds pretty interesting... that was all before my time so, anyone wanna give me a nutshell version?

All during that video it kept reminding me of searching abandoned buildings in fallout 3 and fallout new vegas so I kept waiting for a super mutant to pop out from around the corner, not to mention the flashbacks to modern warfare hehe;)

In all seriousness though I myself would love to visit that place. I have read the story of what happened over and over and watched almost all the videos of actual incident. This accident and other nuclear accidents fascinate me for some reason. I have also thoroughly researched the three mile island incident as well. I guess its because I used to work at a nuclear power plant and seeing all those systems and machinery in general interested me. Not sure what measurement they were using to detect radiation but in the US its the millirem which is 1/1000th of 1 rad and the dose rate is measured as millirem per hour. Up to 100 rads can be absorbed by the human body with only slight damage to red blood cells which isnt even noticed. After 100 up to 200 rads physical illness occurs such as fatigue, vomiting, etc but death is rare at these low levels. From 200 up to 1000 the symptoms get worse with death being more likely the higher you go.

The most radiation I ever received at work at once was 9 millirems and that was when I was doing some work right outside the reactor drywell opening during an outage. The drywell btw is the concrete structure directly surrounding the reactor vessel.
