I have a feeling my post was the reason and I didn't mean to come off as saying 40k is garbage. My whole point was that it's all about what you're doing with your money. I saw kids in high school that saved every bit of money they had from working part time for $6.25/hr while other kids including spoiled ones spent all their dough frivolously. I see adults doing the same every day. You can live a nicer/more luxurious life on your 33k than I do on my income if you spend it differently than I do. Ever since I realized how much money I've wasted I started living SUPER cheap and plan to live nicer once I'm sure I can afford it and not sacrifice other aspects of my life. I love showing up in a 95 Buick. It was embarrassing at first but now most people just realize that they have a huge car note and I spent ~$1250 on a car that is old, but 100% functional.

Once I hit my next financial milestone I will treat myself, but I'm going to stay cash only for major purchases. There is no way I'm getting a loan on anything big unless I can pay it off within a month. I do have and use lines of credit, but its all for small personal/business related purchases.

        Re: Money question?

When I built my V6 up I was in the Navy, single, and making a good paycheck for someone who was 24 yrs old. Now I am 30, Married with Children, and am a Field Engineer for Abbott Labs and making a good amount of money. I am in the process of building my 02 T/A, modding and repainting my 95 Firehawk as well. Its been a slow process as my direction in life has changed a bit. Now I have to pay for my Daughters private school, and we also buy timeshares as well as we get a ton of vacation a year. My cars will be done eventually but I am in no rush.

If you are single and want to set yourself up for making good money in the future I would suggest going into the Military as a Electronic tech and get the GI bill as well.

And it is definatly worth modding a V6 when its done right!!

Lets be honest here, $40k a year is garbage. I made a little over that last year, and only worked 5 months. And out of all that money, I had NOTHING left over for modding. Granted, it does depend on where you live. But currently, my base net pay is roughly $3600 a month, and Im dishing out over $1500 a month in the basic bills. But between Christmas, a rough January, a broken Monte Carlo, and $52k in medical debt, I have little to spare. So that $40k I made last year is pretty much non-existent. Not to say I won't go out to a bar and slap down $200+, because I do, but it doesn't happen every weekend either. Id rather work a full year and make my base $66k-$73k a year than not work and only make a little over $40k. I can do things with that money, and have plans for that money too.

Although some of us actually do make a good amount of money, not all of us can dish it out on this expensive hobby of working and modding cars.

Here are the reasons I am able to have expensive hobbies:

            1. An absolutely awesome and understanding wife
            2. Buying used parts or parts on sale
            3. Doing all the work myself
            4. The military has been very good to me

As someone else said, it's all about your priorities. I have seen posts on some of these sites where people on unemployment were buying mods for their cars.

When I was in high school/college I was working my *** off during the summers so that I could then take all that money and blow it on my car(s). Now I'm working a real job and driving a simple Jeep Cherokee that I'm not touching.

see wes thats what i was talkin about...our basic bills arent even half what yours are but we make around half what you made at best. it really truly depends on where you live...if we were living the same lifestyle we do here with the same size house and same size property etc lets say in chicago for example, there would be no way we could do it on our current income. under 40k is not always garbage...

                  Re: Money question?

keep in mind that i'm married, own my house, have a 16 month old son, we have 2 daily driver cars with payments(06 cobalt ss/sc and a 09 malibu) then our garage queens (01 camaro and 99 mustang gt) that are paid off but still pay insurance on and the fact that i drive 90 miles a day.....our monthly bills are close to 4k a month, if not more....my hubby pays the bills.

everything has to do with where you live.

the only debts we have is our house and the 2 cars. we pay buy everything with credit card, which we pay off every month and reap the reward(cash bacK). We only buy what we need. we don't drink or party. we live a perfect life(for us) we mod our cars. We don't worry about tomorrow since we saved our money yesterday. my husband got a new job a couple months back which is almost double what he was making before(he's a web arcitec) so in a year or so i will be a full time mom :)

                  trust me

                  save you money

It makes me puke a little everytime I log into my online banking and see my cash output. Even in the slow months of Nov, Dec, and Jan, I've been averaging $6500 per month in cash outlay. It's going to go much higher in the summer with racing other extracurriculars.

No woman that will share a house with me will not be without a job if she is capable. My GF tried laying that on me too, telling me she was going to take 3-4 years off after she has kids to raise them, I told her to get fuct. I make good money, but not good enough to afford her student loans, a possible mortgage, my Caddy (when I get a truck paid off), and whatever else will be nessecary.

I seriously don't get it, its 2011. Why would anyone have a parent stay at home when there is perfectly good daycare that can watch a kid for 8-10 hours a day? My GF wants to pass on a $75k-$100k a year job to sit on her fat *** and play with kids......is she ****ing stupid?

She's not stupid, Wes. Everyone has different values and priorities. Some mom's want to spend time with their kids vice making money and working. Different strokes for different folks thats all.

She has a set idea of how Im going to live, and we've butted heads on this idea for awhile now. She thinks she's going to not work when kids are born, and whenever she's just done working, she's going to stop, just like her mom did.

You have to understand where I come from, and the type of people I have lived around. My family WORKS. We work until we die, or someone tells us we can't physically do the work anymore. My grandfather worked the railroad from 1949 till his death in 1986, and he would have kept working at the railroad if it wasn't for the cancer that ate away at his body for 13 years. My other 83 year old grandfather still works part time at an auto auction, his wife is 81 still working at Meijer part time. My father will work till he is dead, my mother will work until her body gives out. My fathers brother is working two jobs now, close to retirement for Allison Transmissions, and now works at another machine shop in his spare time. My other aunts and uncles all work, some of them are reaching 65 now, with no intentions of retiring. I come from a family of workers, so when I see her lazy mom sit around all day at the age of 55 saying she's just DONE working, while having no income at all, and leaving it all to her father to bring in all the money.....its not a life I will ever live, nor is it a lifestyle I would EVER want my kids to witness. I think its disgusting and selfish in this day of age.

My GF, her mom, her grandmother, and her father all live in the same house. The only one with a significant income that is putting it towards the home and house is her father, now granted, he's clearing a GOOD chunk of money as a feeder driver for UPS, but cmon. He's working 10-11 hours a day, roughly 50-55 hours a week, from 3:30 pm and not getting home till atleast 2am or even later. And when he's not working, he's either doing yardwork, chauffering around his wife or the grandmother, because neither can drive, or he's doing other things to the house. I don't think the man has sat down for an hour for himself in years. I seriously feel sorry for him, to a point where I have gone over on my own and done a few things around the house for him, just to give him some time to sit and do nothing. And on top of ALL that, he can't even do what he wants with the money he earns. He is given an ALLOWANCE of $100 a week, while the other $1200 is pocketed by his wife, to pay bills, or go on a shopping spree at Kohl's. If any woman that was with me had intentions of giving me an allowance with the money I earn, I would very seriously slap the **** out of them.

There are plenty of things you can do with that second income. My own idea has been buying real estate; getting a couple houses in Speedway, IN for the price of $80-$90k, and renting them out while we double up on the payments. I also wouldn't mind owning a coin operated business, like a laudromat or carwash. Ive looked into having a carwash built for years now, and I have numbers and contacts for vendors, architects, and builders specifically for that type of business, as well as the contacts for local EPA offices in both Chicagoland and Indianapolis. These are things I can do with that second income, but things I CAN'T do if whoever I end up marrying wants to sit around on her *** with her bachelors/masters degree on the wall watching Oprah all day.

When me and my wife decide to have kids she is staying home. She could maybe work part-time or from home... maybe. But I want her home raising the kids. I'm avoiding putting my kids in a daycare at all costs.

You can't shield them from society, or its horrors. In this age, the quicker you can get them exposed to this world, the faster they can learn to adapt to it. I don't believe in a sheltered life. Their exposure to it is inevitable, why delay that inevitability? You're going to keep them at home, instead of daycare, then what? Home school them? Are they then going to work on their own? There are 6+ billion humans crawling around on this planet, you simply can't quarantine any of them from the rest.

The biggest thing that pisses new parents off is when you tell them that eventually your kid isn't going to want you around. They're going to want to have their own life, their own experiences. They don't want nor need you around for EVERY damn one of them. And the tighter you hold on, the easier they will slip. You CAN'T shelter kids, they have to learn how to co-exist with others, and they have to learn it young.

im with dave, my kid will never step foot in a daycare. wife worked at several and she saw how some of those people treat kids.... which is why she got the hell out of it.

in the next few years id like for the wife to be able to stay home, i have no issue bringing home the bacon while she takes care of the house and kid(s). thats half of what is wrong with the world today, everyone is "too busy" to be bothered with taking care of and raising their kids. they wind up with no idea what family and moral values are. its no coincidence the moral fabric of america started falling apart around the same time both parents started working and spending less time with their kids.
