        Re: New project.

TBI is a type of EFI, it is not however MPFI

TBI- Throttle body injection (one injector-sometimes two- sprays fuel into the TB which mixes and goes into the intake manifold)

EFI - Electronic fuel injection (any method of fuel delivery that uses electronically controlled injectors i.e. not a carb)

MPFI - multi-port fuel injection (one injector per engine cylinder mounted in the intake or directly in the head releasing fuel into the system AFTER the TB)

now our Camaros use a type of MPFI known as SFI

        SFI - Sequential Fuel Injection

And I know a decent amount about the 80's 350's.

Is she Stick or auto and what seems to be going on with the tranny

Auto. And it just doesn't like to move... it wont go into gear. Or it will, and will go REAAALLLY slow. Maybe the tranny is just gummed up from sitting so long?

is the transmission making any noises, like whinning/grinding or something?
            check transmission fluid in it?
Why was it parked to begin with?
how do you know its running rich?
what is the problem with the stearing column, does the stearing wheel move up and down or something?

-No, just doesn't move the damn tires.
-Yes, it leaks. Tranny pan gasket needs replaced.
-Because the steering column became unsafe, and my brother (who was driving it at the time) got a Dakota instead. I know, it's stupid.
-I can smell it in the exhaust, it smells like straight gas.
-Not really? It moves in every direction. It's not rigid at all. Just floppy. Floppy column.

"floppy column" sounds like a personal problem...lol
this is what i think your talking about, my girlfriends 93 GMC Yukon had that issue. heres how to fix it.

what all have you tried to fix the transmission. may seem completely unrelated but i had a 1970 nova with a 2 speed powerglide, and it sat about a year till i put a fuel pump on it and got it running again. at any rate, it would not move and any gear, so what i did was got my dad to help me, put it in drive and rock the car back and forth revved it. did this for a bit and boom, it worked. slowly but surely it did. maybe get some buddies to help you rock it out of its hole and see what happens. add some transmission fluid first.

and as for the rich problem. idk, ill have to research that.

As for the steering column, that's tomorrow's project. The tranny, haven't done anything. I'm going to change the gasket, and change fluid. Maybe that will help. After that, I think I can get it moving again at least.

                    Re: New project.

On an '89 that should be a 700r4 tranny, it's the pre-runner to our 4l60e and uses a little bit of electronics for shift points but mostly manual operation.

When you shift into gear are you noticing a change in the engine at all? it may not be shifting properly.

Check the cable on the side of the transmission and try to move the selector manually (********WARNING******** MAKE SURE YOUR PARKING BRAKE IS ON AND ENGINE IS OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

If the engine smells rich, how does it seem to run? Pull a spark plug and see how it looks.

Could be an injector stuck open, an electrical problem in the ECM, or a MAF problem, Clean your MAF and TB real good and consider a seafoam treatment

Yes the tranny is hooked up. It goes into gear, just doesn't like to spin.. I'll try to get a video of it tomorrow. And the engine seems to run fine at idle, but when you start to move it dies pretty shortly.

I had an '89 S-10. It was the 4.3 v6, but it's basically the exact same setup. It had TBI with 2
injectors (yes it's a form of EFI.) Ran rock solid for the 216k that I had it.

                        - Side Note - All fuel injection that is controlled by a computer is Electronic Fuel Injection or EFI.
Unless it is mechanically fuel injected (like the old Ram-Jet Corvettes) it's EFI.

Start by changing the plugs, wires and distributor cap/rotor. That may
help with your unburned gas. The coil may also be a little weak.

My S-10 had the exact same floppy column issue. I found out that it is a common
prob with that era (mine was so bad that it wouldn't shift out of park sometimes.)
Easiest thing to do is find another one at a junk yard and swap the whole thing out.

As for the tranny, I would start by draining it and replacing the gasket and filter.
Fill her back up and see what happens. If it still won't move, you probably have some fried clutches or something.

I'm working on the steering column today for sure, but if I can I'll get into the tranny. Sucks though cuz its been sitting in mulch for so long, it's buried in.

Well. It was going good, I got the bolts tightened up and all, so its just putting it back together. Easy job.. the snow stopped me short. Tranny next weekend... still needs abattery though.

I realized yesterday that its been in drive for months. I've had it running for 15-20 minutes on mulipe occasions, and it didn't budge..
