If you like it though, more power to ya, but I know I wouldn't spend $10k on a 130,000 mile BMW. You'll spend another $5k getting it to 200k.

You're really talking out of your *** here bud. I'd rather take a 200k mile E36 than ANYTHING GM produced in the 80's-90's. Mercedes diesels from the early 80's are known to run 300k+ miles.

I think it's a very nice car. E39's are on my list of cool cars I wouldn't mind owning. My E46 was relatively problemless save for the battery taking a dump in 100+ degree Vegas weather, and the lower control arm bushings being shot which was a known issue with the car. I haven't driven anything newer than an 06, but I'd give them a try. Also, I'd rather deal with a BMW service department rather than GM. Imagine going somewhere that customer service actually means something!

Re: Ok b.m.w. Love me or hate me!!

The diesels are not bad, but thats where I draw the line. Anything gasoline powered from Merc, BMW, or VW save a Beetle were terrible when it came to maintenance. Not much of anything from the 80's that I would own, domestic or foreign, just the way CAFE railed automakers for cars being sold in the US. But I know alot of those diesels Merc made at the time were being directly imported from Europe, with little changes. And they weren't exactly the cleanest running car either.

I can throw a rock and hit a pollack or arab driving a mid to late 90's Merc or BMW from my porch. And every one of them has their hands under the hood of it any given day of the week. Again, I can't argue the luxuriousness of a Merc or BMW, they are good at that, but reliability? Not a chance. Ive seen older Taurus's and Cavy's make it longer.

Well, I guess you got your answer to your original question. Love me or hate me?
Seems that most hate you. Personally, I like your car. This thread has turned into the
typical 'domestic vs import' or 'Chevy vs Ford' arguement. Ignore it, and enjoy your new Beemer.
It's a nice car, no matter what. They all have their ups and downs, pros and cons.
Don't worry about it, just drive it.

Sorry, Im just too opinionated to not say anything at all, too much in my nature. But in the end its your car, do with it what you want.

Up here in Connecticut, if you drive a BMW, you get called a BIFF or MUFFY! :D Have you already made a name for any of the BMW Car Forums yet?

Definitely agree with the fact that BMW or any other European parts will cost you more in the long run. Swapped waterpumps for a milfs '87 Jaguar XJ6 and vowed I'll never do that again but skills for thrills paid off lol. :naughty:

Everytime I look at Euroboxes I still cringe. Makes me happy I stuck with the American V8 or V6 since I was 15. Good luck with your car though.

Oh by the way, did ya know BMW stands for:

                      Big Money Waster
                      Breaks Most Wrenches
                      Break My Windows

                      Brought Me Worries
                      Big Money WHY?

my favorite thing in the world- you can buy a 1993 z28 camaro with a 6spd and 100k on the clock for like $2000....and they run 13s, smoke the tires and would beat a 540i to 60 all day long

540s are great cars dont get me wrong, but it WILL cost you a pretty penny to fix and the entire cadillac V series outperforms them...i could go on forever but ill stop here

Thank you!...dump another 5 grand or less PROPERLY into em, and you can get one to spit out 10's

Parts are cheap and easy to replace...BMW...not so much...oh and don't forget about those famous axle shafts that snap like tooth-picks worse then our rear ends do...atleast our sh*t is cheap to fix though...I can go through 3-4 rears for what it will cost you to replace one ...
