i just upgraded to 4.0.1, and its awful. all the text that used to be bold, is now all the same size, it doesnt seem as fast as it used to. I also miss the simplicity, yet security. I just dont like it, so now im looking for a new browser. whats everyone's take on chrome? i hear its good, but i have always been a firefox kinda guy. i also have k-meleon but i only use that for gophernet, and not even that often, and even then, its still mozilla, just less pretty.

I use Opera mostly, I used to be all about firefox but I like this much better than firefox and google chrome.

Go back to a non-beta version. I've been using the beta version on my laptop, and yeah, it is different. Haven't noticed a difference in speed. My desktop is on the regular version and just said that 3.7.x was available earlier this week.

        Re: firefox users?

Firefox 4.0.1 is not beta any more. I'm not sure what you mean by loss in simplicity, they actually made it simpler like chrome by hiding the tool bars. You can pretty much make it look exactly like the older version by re-enabling the tool bars in the View menu.

I also don't know what you mean by "all the text that used to be bold, is now all the same size", that's not a default view for any version of Firefox. By default the 'boldness' and style of the text is supposed to be controlled by the CSS and HTML encoding of the page. A good browser shouldn't be making everything bold by default, since it will distort the appearance of the site you're viewing when compared with what the designer of the site wanted it to look like. You most likely had the old browser install zoomed into the text via CTRL+mouse wheel scroll or via the View menu, making it appear bold. Then after the new version was installed you lost the zoom level you had it set to. You can still make the text look bold by zooming in via the view menu or the mouse wheel method. You can even set your default font/size in the preferences. Performance wise the new Firefox seems about the same, but uses less memory.

For performance/simplicity you can switch to Chrome. It's pretty much like the new Firefox except it doesn't have all the cool/useful plugins, but is a bit faster. Opera sucks in my opinion, it's slow, doesn't render sites properly, it's basically one of those "alternative" browsers for internet hipsters of the early 2000's. It doesn't really work right. It's like people that kept using Netscape for years after it was dead. If you're moving to Opera, you're moving in the wrong direction. Hipsters in the know are all using Chrome now, but because it's a Google product it actually works so I can't hate on it too much. You can always go back to IE, but security is weak and it has many little faults that personally annoy me to the point of wanting to punch babies.

I havent used google chrome since it first came out, I was having alot of issues with it and basically gave up on it. I should probably try it again and see how I like it.

I've been avoiding updating since it stated that some of my add ons wouldn't work. you may have just convinced me to keep it that way :)

                        Re: firefox users?

Check task manager, see what process is using most CPU. Kill it if you don't need it running, see if problem reoccurs. If you're computer is running slow after installing chrome it is because:

                        1. You have some kind of hardware issue (overheating cpu/gpu, bad ram, failing hard drive, etc..) If Firefox, IE, etc.. work fine than it's not the case, they would be failing too.

                        2. Your hardware is too old, underpowered or otherwise insufficient to run Chrome. If Firefox, IE, etc.. work fine, then it's not the case. Chrome is lighter than all of them.

                        3. You're doing something wrong.

Excluding hardware issues you're probably doing something wrong. This is why I don't help my non-tech savvy friends with their "slow computer" issues any more (stopped about 7-8 years ago actually.) These days if you're a girl and I'm spending the night, then maybe I'll fix your computer if I happen to use it while I'm over.

Except for cases of bad/insufficient hardware, every time I've helped a friend with a "slow computer" it was just user error. Such as installing browser bars, search bars, fake registry/windows/hardware fixing products (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scareware), viruses, crappy anti-virus (norton, mcafee, etc..) software, malware, ****ty p2p programs (limewire, edonkey, etc...) Non-scene outsiders downloading warez from places they shouldn't be downloading from and getting viruses, trojan horses, etc... (again ****ty P2P programs). Fake porn downloads, email viruses, worms, internet scams and dating scams are still rampant.

My accountant's computer recently had some malware on it. Turns out she's been installing every browser bar known to man. FFFFUUUUUU accountant lady... She should switch to paper and an abacus, then I'd feel safe.

I go to school online, and new posts in the forums for school used to all be in bold, so i could distinguish between them. Now i dont see the bold, all the text is the same size. I didn't have this issue prior to updating to the new version.

going back to IE8 is not an option, but i did enable to tool bar, makes it easier to find stuff. i like everything at my fingertips, not hidden away from me.

As for speed, do you think I need to go in and reconfigure all the settings i had in the old one? Like enable piplining, and whatnot?

Hah yea I still cringe going past tech pits/cube farms for our server hosting businesses (it's all Linux sysadmin techs.) Thankfully I haven't worked helpdesk in a long time.
