1. Brown nosing.. I never said anything about brown nosing. You can make your boss look better by never saying anything to anyone or kiss assing. It's hardwork that pays off.

Apparently I must have it all wrong because I started out painting trailers 5ish years ago for 8 bucks an hour and now I'm the one doing the payroll. I just bought a nice house in a nice suburb, I've got a fiance, 2 camaros and I can keep my head above water just fine. P.S. I don't work in, for, or around a union either.

So now you're an office manager? Im supposed to be impressed because you brown-nosed your way into reordering toner for the printers? Listen, each persons path is different. You couldn't do the payroll where I work, you'd be bogged down. You couldn't do the construction because you'd be eaten alive being that kind of sell out. Someone like you would never move up in what I do because you'd be nothing more than a stepping stone. You'd be used and abused, and you're fine with that because you're naive enough to think someone will speak for you. Now I will agree with you that hard work will get you somewhere, but not in the fashion you say. Takes more than just hard work. Have to be able to be independent, a fast thinker, on your feet, and you have to prove noting to no one but the people signing your check. You have to take risks, and be willing to step away from the norm to do something better than what your boss says. Everyone else is in the way of progress. People in the working environment are either with you or against you, there is no middle ground. Either they support you by allowing you to speak for yourself, or they're in the way of progress. Why you would EVER make someone else look good boggles my ****ing mind.....its just a silent form of brown-nosing. Very often I am left to make the judgement calls outside from what my boss says, simply because he's either not there, not up to date with his info, or just off doing something else. The only thing we need him for is the address, the material, and use as a customer contact. Thats about it. We don't make him look good, we make ourselves look good to the customers.


BTW, the lady that does payroll for my company makes 1/2 of what I make. She's the office manager. Her name is Sally.:D

Being hard working is definitely part of working up the ranks. If you're a terrible worker, you'll get nowhere; but at the same time you're boss isn't going to just let you pass them up or outshine them in the workplace. You need to be independent. Though not be so stupid as to make everybody enemies in the workplace or there will always be a tension between you and everybody, possibly getting less opportunities. That said, I think it's pretty safe to say you'll never make real money working for somebody else... or at least not in comparison. People that own their own business will almost always be making more money on almost any scale. The less people on top of you or that you're working for, and the more that are working for you, the better.

Hey, if you're too sensitive don't get yourself into these situations.

You guys just don't get the concept of making your boss look good. Your boss has a different job than the grunts. He has to see over several people and know who to put on whichever job there is. He looks good when the jobs are done well because he knows who can do what, strong points, weak points, etc.. There's more to it than just that but you guys seriously took this out of context and assumed I was talking about kiss assing.
