  • Man Robs Bank for $1 in order to get free healthcare in jail

Some people who need medical care but can't afford it go to the emergency room. Others just hope they'll get better. James Richard Verone robbed a bank.

a 59-year-old convenience store clerk, walked into a Gaston, N.C., bank and handed the cashier a note demanding $1 and medical attention. Then he waited calmly for police to show up.

He's now in jail and has an appointment with a doctor this week.
Verone's problems started when he lost the job he'd held for 17 years as a Coca Cola deliveryman, amid the economic downturn. He found new work driving a truck, but it didn't last. Eventually, he took a part-time position at the convenience store.

But Verone's body wasn't up to it. The bending and lifting made his back ache. He had problems with his left foot, making him limp. He also suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis.
Then he noticed a protrusion on his chest. "The pain was beyond the tolerance that I could accept," Verone told the Gaston Gazette. "I kind of hit a brick wall with everything."

Verone knew he needed help--and he didn't want to be a burden on his sister and brothers. He applied for food stamps, but they weren't enough either.

So he hatched a plan. On June 9, he woke up, showered, ironed his shirt. He mailed a letter to the Gazette, listing the return address as the Gaston County Jail.

"When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me," Verone wrote in the letter. "This robbery is being committed by me for one dollar. I am of sound mind but not so much sound body."

Then Verone hailed a cab to take him to the RBC Bank. Inside, he handed the teller his $1 robbery demand.

"I didn't have any fears," said Verone. "I told the teller that I would sit over here and wait for police."

The teller was so frightened that she had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out. Verone, meanwhile, was taken to jail, just as he'd planned it.

Because he only asked for $1, Verone was charged with larceny, not bank robbery. But he said that if his punishment isn't severe enough, he plans to tell the judge that he'll do it again. His $100,000 bond has been reduced to $2,000, but he says he doesn't plan to pay it.

In jail, Verone said he skips dinner to avoid too much contact with the other inmates. He's already seen some nurses and is scheduled to see a doctor on Friday. He said he's hoping to receive back and foot surgery, and get the protrusion on his chest treated. Then he plans to spend a few years in jail, before getting out in time to collect Social Security and move to the beach.

Verone also presented the view that if the United States had a health-care system which offered people more government support, he wouldn't have had to make the choice he did.

"If you don't have your health you don't have anything," Verone said.

The Affordable Care Act, President Obama's health-care overhaul passed by Congress last year, was designed to make it easier for Americans in situations like Verone's to get health insurance. But most of its provisions don't go into effect until 2014.
As it is, Verone said he thinks he chose the best of a bunch of bad options. "I picked jail."

wow what a message. I can't say he was smart for doing what he did or dumb for not doing it sooner.

This is bound to get some more government attention on this topic.

to me, this is just another scam costing tax payer dollars....no better than people on welfare IMO. sounds like he got hurt on the job and should have went on workmans comp and seen a work comp doc, or sued the company. much better options than taking tax payer dollars

Its pretty sad when you get better treatment in prison than if you were on the street. I don't blame the guy if it was me I would do the same thing, either tax payers pay for him in prison or on the street , its all the same. It just shows you how bad the system is, If he was a illegal he would get treatment right away which is pretty sad. Look how many illegals get money, housing and medical for free.

Guy is an idiot.... It is illegal to be denied required medical services. If any medical facility denied him medical services he needed, he would be a millionaire, for the lawsuit he won for the.medical facility blatantly violating the law.

I know this is the case, but most hospitals arent going to do anything more than keep you alive and possibly pain free. If it isn't a required or necessary surgury, they'll just push you back out the door.

X2 Hopital would do the least for you then turn around and get a bill for thousands of dollars and if they don't get paid , they send you to collections. So now you have no credit and still in pain.

Medicalbills do not affect your credit... My credit score dropped about 10 points when i was $192k in debt and I believe the reason why my score dropped is i moved and my girlfriend at the time took over all the bills because we moved in the middle of my medical problems. I had a. Cronic problem that required over 7 months of treatment, via numerous doctors and specialists. Nothing was immediate medical issue like a broken leg, etc....

And canadian healthcare isn't free.... It is like saying the military is free. If I broke a leg Canada is fine, major medical problem? I'll stay in the USA thank you.

I had 2 doctor offices take me to colllections which then lowered my credit and also banning me to see the DR. again at that practice.

That is grossly false, and I have the files to prove you wrong. If you care to go thru a 4-drawer file cabinet, you'll soon understand why I have lived a cash life for the last 6 years.

Funny I owed quest diagnostics a good 30k and still got lab work from them.

They will take you to collections. I got a call from a collection agency as I was driving to my wedding lol.

Even if it rings your credit.you still get the help you need. Go back to him in serious need of help, if he denies you service pull out a tape recorder and say

"are you saying you arw denying me medical care I need based on my ability to pay."

See what he says..... Anyways the ER will never deny you.

Either way what affects your life more.... Medical debt which is not treated the same as regular debt...... Or being convicted of a crime and incarcerated and probably recieve worse health care.

Funny I have a new car financed at at 6.1% for 72 months(I paid off early) through a bank les then 2 years from being $200k in debt.

I had drawars full of mail from collection agencies.

It doesn't affect your credit the same. I still suggest having insurance though. Still screwed me up financially. But I recovered. We live in the US you are not going to die in the street because you can't afford medical treatment. You dont even have to be a us citizen to get medical trwatment.

My wife worked in a rehab center for people who did not need to be in a hospital, but weren't well enougg to go home. Most of them had no insurance. They got the care they needed.
