  • Hurricane Irene - 100 Year Event ?

Ok so the West Coasters laughed at us East Coasters for the recent 5.9 earthquake. Fine, it was a rare event for sure but I doubt they can handle a hurricane of these proportions.
( I guess they call them cyclones out West )

Now we have Hurricane Irene barreling towards NC and all the way towards New England directly. I am watching this major storm big time, it's been decades and we were overdue for this calamity.

I want to know how many of you are affected by this major weather event. It will be one to be reckoned with. These fierce storms are probably gonna be the norm for our lifetimes I feel.

PICS: Today at 3AM, I went earlybird shopping at my local 24 hr supermarket to find the water and bread aisles picked semi clean and the night crew said they're double stocking the basics already. The storm is nearly 2 days away at this time of writing.

Throwing in a pic of my Camaro "fleet" I took yesterday. I reside on the CT shoreline and safekeeping the 2002 SS in the garage for sure!
I hope the Category 4 storm is reduced to a Cat 1 by the time it reaches me but only time will tell.

i live in miami and we are already use to storms here, here we just lock up and chill when theres a storm, we normally get a 2 week supply of bottled water and live our life like its no big deal. only time we worry is when its a cat 5. then we run for the hills. most houses here are single floor full concrete with flat roofs. so ur pretty much safe at home all the way till a cat 4 storm. normally here we get power back with in 3-4 days after a major storm.

I hope everything works out for you guys up there. I hate Hurricanes, there is nothing like leaving everything you have behind and running, it's a terrible feeling and experience.

You lucky fool. Between getting direct hit of Frances, Jeanne, Charlie, and Wilma; Id say we had about 6 months worth of no power... Most of the power was turned on about 3 days before Jeanne, then out for about 3 weeks... I think thats the worst of it, because no AC (sorry Im spoiled). With all that humitity, I could go into a sauna and cool off (with the exception of Wilma).

Good luck to you all about to get hit. Be ready, be safe.

Agreed. I lived in Florida through all those hurricanes, and also old school Hurricane Andrew. Bad news. I lived in Port Saint Lucy at the time. West Coast baby!!!!!! Only thing I have to worry about is Mount. Rainier, which is due for an eruption lol

5.9 earthquake and followed by a hurricane!!

All you guys need now is "fire" to outdo us westcoast!!!

                -------------

You know there's a simply logic to this. Earthquake happened because of Obama's Fault. Irene is coming because that's Michelle's homie.

Thought I throw that in :)

Re: Hurricane Irene - 100 Year Event ?

I ordered a new 69 maro RC car from Foxboro MA last thursday. It stayed in the "processing" status for half a week and I was wondering why. Only a handful of houses there have power apparently. I, like an impatient A-hole, canceled my order from them and re-ordered from a shop in cali yesterday. It'll be here tomorrow. I feel a little bad about it cause I'm probably not the only one to cancel an order from them, on top of the whole hurricane deal.

                          Living by candlelight earlier...

Wow, I just got my power restored after my 1st cold shower lol. Feels good to sign back on too.

No damage on my end but several houses were damaged severely at the extreme coastline areas here in CT.

I have this loud neighbor who usually blasts his Harley in the morning and his dogs constant barking was replaced by the sound of two generators buzzing in his backyard. He lost power due to a large tree snapping the power lines nearby. I wish I took the pics of the large fallen trees before the tree crews came quickly to assess and chainsaw them to sawdust, it was havoc here.

A few lessons I learned for storm preparation in the future:

                          - Unscented candles, enough to illuminate your kitchen and bathroom.
                          - Dry ice or cubed ice to stock in the fridge.
                          - Don't buy so much meat and perishables, I had to throw some away.
                          - Stock enough flashlight batteries of various sizes.
                          - Extra cash from the ATM for those "just in case" scenarios.
                          - An extra propane tank for the grill.
                          - Quick showers prolong the hot water in your tank 'til lukewarm.
                          - An extra cellphone battery or three. Family and friends were checking up on me, effectively killing my battery in no time.

I could mention more but I'm enjoying the electricity we take for granted and reading about another hurricane that just formed in the Atlantic, named Katia.

And now for some awesome pics from scenic Connecticut.

I feel sorry for those who lost their lives. Believe it or not many of them think they could just ride this storm and ignore their officials warning to head down to the shelter. Nevertheless, it's still sad.
