Never ever go local. I've heard nothing but horror stories. Always go for big insurance companies that's not going to close down, forge signatures, run out of money or bail out on you.
Funny, my family has done insurance since the twenties and done nothing of that sort. In fact, a few of their newer clients switched over from one of the larger companies because of forgery issues. Maybe you like talking to an answering machine when you've had an accident, but most people I know prefer to talk to a real person that can be there to help them. You can't get that with a big insurance company.
So long as you're dealing with a certified agent or a current independent, then there shouldn't be any issues. Plus they can offer you those same rates with the bigger companies if you prefer.

My parents use State Farm and I can call them whenever...I did once to check the price of insurance for the Miata and he didn't seem all that enthused. Maybe I have to do it in person.

I'm not saying all, but most. You can talk to real people with big companies. Geico has a 24/7 customer service rep you can talk too. Bigger companies are just safer.
Trust me, I used to work insurance company here that targets Latino and they are ripping them off big time. I can tell you all about it, but it's too long.
