  • My boss has a vicious dog...

So at my night job, My boss has a german shephard that is insane. Its one of the most vicious dogs I have ever met.

Its completely unstable, and makes me nervous. I talked to him a few nights ago about the dog and told him that I may be forced to quit working for him if he doesnt do something about the dog.

Shortly after I started working there, he invited me to bring my dog by to see if they got along okay, so that they could be pals and he could come to work with me at night. Long story short, As I pulled up in my truck the dog came up to the door, and seemed okay at first. My dog hopped out of the truck and within seconds his dog 'diesel' had my dog on the ground, with a death grip on my dogs neck. The dog was wearing a shock collar, and as soon as this went down he started to shock the dog. I did everything in my power to get my dog to safety, I was beating the fuking sh!t out of this dog to get him to release, as he was being shocked. It only lasted a few seconds, but it felt like it was an hour and I was so mad, and sad for my dog at the same time.

A few weeks back, he was in his crate in the shop.. and as I walked past, about 10 feet away, out of nowhere, the dog went crazy, growling and ramming the cage door trying to attack me. It scared the ever loving sh!t out of me.

Now, about a week ago, his gf was over at the shop, with her son. Hes 7, and hes allowed to play with this stupid *** excuse for a 'pet'. Not 10 minutes into it, he was bit. Nothing bad, but it's to the point where this dog needs to be put down in my opinion. I hate to have to quit, Its a great job, but this dog is unstable, and feel like it will attack at anytime.

The worst part, is he lets this dog run free around the shop.

    What would you guys do?

Why not call a dog warden?

Re: My boss has a vicious dog...

Because technically its an inside dog. It isnt even the slightest bit aggressive toward my boss. He had warned me (which scares me) to make sure not to walk anywhere near its food bowl because he will "rip your head off".. Etc

Although the food bowl is always in different locations because he pushes it around when its empty.

Another thing, when im running the fork lift, or using a blow gun hooked to the air compressor the dog growls, and paces the floor.

Do you work at a yard or something? Is this dog solitary most of the time?

The dog lacks discipline. It probably doesn't get enough attention or it doesn't have a sense of belonging. Dogs are social animals and they belong in a pack with a leader to guide them. All this dog has is his territory and it will defend it.

Next time you see this dog and it visciously starts barking at you just don't show any fear. Get really close to it, like invade its space, just be sure though that your hands and forearms are behind you. Look down at it with a very serious look and eyes wide open, don't even blink. If it starts growling with you that close then get even closer till your body is next to his. I bet you he will calm down and submit. Then let him start smelling you and it's probably even safe then to pat him on the head and chin.

I did this with my uncle's huge doberman, which he neglected severely, he only feeds it and that's it. This is a pure bred HUGE doberman and I made him submit. I showed him I was the leader.

Disclaimer: I will not be held responsible if you decide to follow my advice and you get bit.

Have the dog put down if its that agressive before it really does harm.

Haha, My dog is very well behaved, he knows who's in charge and is very obidient..

I am not afraid of 99% of dogs, but 'diesel' is FAR from normal.. Doing what you suggested would be like tempting a raging serial killer to kill you.

I agree, That is what I think should be done. BUT.. It is not my dog, and its not like I can just take this psycho dog to the vet and have it put down. My boss understands he's not normal, but putting down one of the only things he really loves, isnt on his agenda.

He always has an excuse as to why his dog did this, or why he freaked out here, or why he bit this person etc..

It's a hot rod shop / car restoration. But the economy sucks right now and we have 5 unfinished cars sitting around because the owners dont have money to finish the job.

So, We do sandblasting / media blasting. Cars, semi's, motorcycles, parts, wheels etc.
That is mostly what I do. I do alot of welding here as well.

Now that car biz has slowed down, we have been painting a ton of motorcycles.

Re: My boss has a vicious dog...

I would just put together a "nice" letter to your boss stating that you feel like the dog is a threat to your personal safety and that you feel that your boss has not taken all reasonable steps to insure your personal safety from this dog.

Document the letter by sending it through email, or something. If your boss has any scruples the dog will disappear from the workplace.

Your boss has a responsibility to keep a reasonably safe workplace; You'll be in a strong position to take legal action if the dog harms you after you have documentation stating your concerns.

My brother had a kita(sp?) a similar dog to a german shepard chew his arm up and the owner did nothing about the dog.

So... Few days/weeks later my brothers(I have 2) tossed a firecracker to him and wouldnt you know he ate it. Sometimes ya gotta handle things for those kinda people. :D

you have a right to refuse unsafe work and working conditions...tell him you refuse to work if the dog is free to roam around...call the MOL if needed, you don't have to quit, and he cant fire you...if he does, you can take your case to the MOL, and if the dog is that viscious then when they show up they are going to see that...
