Re: My boss has a vicious dog...

Why don't you just save everyone time and money by just quitting if he doesn't want to get rid of the dog. In the end, you'll get fired eventually if you start calling OSHA and wtf ever else and it'll cost you both frustration, time, and money. If he can't keep employees around because of the dog he'll learn his lesson. I'm tired of idiots trying to collect for doing nothing. This country has gone down the ****ter and coincidentally(?) we have more laws for every little thing you do than ever. See the connection?

this is different than scamming and trying to collect unemployment or free money...you cannot be wrongfully dismissed. This is there to protect the worker...why should anyone have to have the burden on them to have to find another job when the economy is sh*t? when they shouldnt have to? Its not like this is just something that a worker doesnt like...it is a very real health and safety hazard...that kind of dog is fully capable of doing quite a bit of damage...its not a little pooch that you could just pick up and put somewhere.

The owner of the company has a 100% obligation to keep the workers safe.

Furthermore, even if they did fire him down the line, they would have to give him severance pay...again, why would you default all that when you have done nothing wrong?...now you wanna go out and spend maybe 2 months looking for a new job?...do you want to pay his bills while he does that?

No offence man, it sounds like your one of the workers that can be easily bullied into doing unsafe work...you would be amazed at what employers try to get away with, and what type of irreversable injuries employees have recieved.

I studied OHS in University for 3 years before I changed programs because it wasnt for me...

I will admit some of the laws are getting ridiculous, for instance the next biggest thing that employers are going to be sued over is not having AED equipment at the workplace and having an employee suffer a heart attack and die.

^ this is one of those things you'll actually begin to notice being introduced to many workplaces as of right now... most arenas and sport complexes should already have them put in place and AED training done....

And leaving an oblivious owner and his dangerous dog to harm someone else is the right thing to do?

I have no sympathy for people who don't have the time or skills to train their dogs. If you can't be responsible for properly training your dog, then you shouldn't have the right to keep it.

Try approaching him again, maybe this time with any other concerned coworkers and address the situation again. Point out the incidents where the dog has been unnecessarily aggressive or has bit someone. Maybe even mention how that dog is a liability to his business and that it could be taken away or put down. If he cares about it or his business he'll have to realize that it needs proper training or to be left at home.

Re: My boss has a vicious dog...

I can almost gurantee you that if you go and say you refuse to work because it is unsafe with the dog present, he is going to chain the dog up, or remove it from the shop area...he's not going to go through the hassle of initiating a work refusal and all the b.s involved when the simplest fix is to tie the dog up...he's retarded if he does...

No offense taken because I wouldn't do anything that I thought was stupid on the job. I do think it's stupid the employer would have a dog in a shop regardless of it's disposition. What I want to know is.. how long has the dog been there and how long has this employment gone on. If it's a sudden change, I can see it being rectified quickly without incident. If not.. why the hell would you wait so long to say anything about it?

Idk about Ohio, but here in IL jobs aren't exactly falling out of the sky. Can't just up and quit, and shouldn't have to if the conditions aren't safe. It's a legit complaint. I can't recall the last time I heard someone *****ing about a hard hat or safety glasses on a job site, but I know quite a few with scars on their faces and scalps that are glad they were wearing them. It's a safety issue.

I know if some ****ing dog bit me, I'd take it down myself, in the least humane way as possible.

I'm pretty sure it boils down to.. Just talk to your employer. I get annoyed when people instantly jump the gun and say.. "Oh go to the government, they'll help you fight your employer."

you cant do that....if you go straight to the government the first thing they ask is if you have talked with your supervisor...there is a process, you have to follow the steps...MOL wont even come out until those steps are followed.

In this case, the owner would be retarded if it got past step 1...

The Federal EEOC would rip him a new @ss if after complaints of the dog biting and going after people and he still kept it there, talk about gettiing his @ss fined until the dog is gone. Even if it bites someone you can call local Police and they will come out with animal control to have it put down, thats after he gets fined for not having a dog on the lease. But it shouldn't have to come to that if you talk with him about it and tell him what the dog has done and what will happen if he doesn't resolve the problem with the dog.
