Auto train

So there was one thread, but they took a mini-van. The bird and I are going to saddle up and drive to Lorton from pittsburgh, auto-train to sanford, then back to school in Melbourne. Has anyone taken their f-body on the train?

It looks like our total length is a little longer than their listed length for a regular car, frankly I'm just hoping they don't notice. I'm also going to grab some clear 3m vinyl and throw it on the nose, I don't like driving my car in the winter with salt on the road.

You are asking about transporting your firebird on a freight train, Correct?

Why wouldnt you just drive it? It has to be cheaper / and take about 1/4 of the time it would to take the train. ... Pittsburg to Melbourne Florida?

I just wanted to see if anyone else had done it. As far as not driving it, I'm an irrational person. But primarily I wasn't sure if I wanted to drive it a thousand miles, it really isn't that much cheaper to drive so with such a small difference I'm opting to put around 340 miles on the car instead of 1000.

We've put our minivans on the Auto Train twice. No troubles at all. F bodies should be just fine. The people in Lorton were more picky about vehicle length than Sanford. Pretty much, however, you've already bought the ticket, so they just will say something to you and then put the car on without going through the giant hassle of changing the price.

The upgrade to first class / private roomette is really worth it. Plus, you get better food and a better dining car and a private wine tasting area (you just have to leave them a few bucks tips during the wine tasting).

It beats the heck out of driving when you're sitting there on the train with a wine glass in one hand and thinking about how you could have been focusing on constantly driving instead.

Upgrading the ticket isn't an option, they were actually sold out for early january, basically I ran a script against their site till any spot opened up lol. I'm going alone so I think I'll be alright with a coach seat, I've developed a talent for sleeping almost anywhere. I'm actually excited to ride on a train, the only one I've been on was in germany, and while I'm sure it is a different experience it will be nice to have my car down here.
