The local gleaning group, CROS Ministries, is harvesting corn, tomatoes and peppers across Palm Beach County each weekend right now because all of the crops are ready across south Florida. Gleaning means harvesting crops that farmers have left over, don't find economical to pick or simply are in a crop that the farmer chooses to donate.
Today in Lake Worth the group I was in filled 360 big boxes full of tomatoes. They'll be in food pantries for the hungry and needy by Monday.
My wife is amazing. She helps do this many times throughout the winter harvest season here.
The day started with a problem , but it was eventually ovecome. Last night, thieves stole the tires (but not the rims) off of the truck the CROS uses to collect and distribute the food boxes. By 10:30, the tires had been replaced and the truck was able to go to the fields.
Feed the hungry.
