I'm pretty sure volvo is actually safer...could be wrong though.

Chances are that if you can afford a brand new Mercedes, then you can afford the maintenance....Go figure.

Thanks Capt. O. Guess my next question would be of you can afford a Mercedes, and the maintenance, why the low end C class? Seems to be a class of car for people who probably shouldn't buy one in the first place.

No, what you should be after is the one that will absorb kinetic energy better upon impact. Remember that energy will pass thru you. Cars no matter what brand will never as safe as bigger SUV's.

Just curious. How much do you guys think the maintenance cost is for a Mercedes?

Don't know but cant be much more than a regular vehicle. You can change oil a regular maintance without taking it in, I would assume.

Lots of the entry level C classes will be corporate leases. People buy these cars for the badge. Many sales men, and middle managers, etc.. will drive them. The thought is that arriving in a benz, no matter how low end is better than a higher end model of a different car. This is why most of the used ones you see are nearly identical. They're off-lease ones with MB-TEX (pleather), the same base spec, a few small upgrades and no navigation.

For instance I could have bought an entry level C300 or used C350 instead of my G8, the C would have that "benz" bling appeal, but my car is "just a pontiac" despite being a bigger, more comfortable and 6.0L beast. Though because mine is Holden re-badged, most people just don't know what it is, and being black and big it seems to impress regardless LOL. I spy guys scoping out the back trying to figure out what it is after business lunch/dinner meetings all the time.

Also lots of times wives/girlfriends end up with these cars. Most girls I know could care less which engine is in the car or which spec it is. ie. Girl I'm seeing said her dream car is a 328i, she just likes the badge and looks. I know on the other hand I wouldn't be impressed by a 328i, an M3 is impressive, but not a 328. Women just don't really care.

You need to use their oil/filters and other lubricants like with BMWs AFAIK. That can probably get expensive, many new cars seem to take a lot of oil. My G8 takes damn near $100 to do an oil change YOURSELF.

MB offers relatively reasonably priced maintenance packages up to 5 years (or 6 I forget.)

One thing to remember is that the Germans (not just MB) tend to make special tools a requirement for even the most basic jobs (ie. brakes). Also I know Mercedes brakes get pretty damn pricey to replace. Basically with Benzes its going to be expensive either way you go. If you buy new and use the warranty, you lose on depreciation. If you buy used with limited or expiring warranty you will take the hit on maintenance.

As with most things that are beyond basic necessity you don't buy these cars on your last dollar. My rule of thumb is, if you can afford to pay cash on the spot to replace the engine & trans in the car you're buying in a worst case scenario, you can afford the car.

Figures they would only make that you only need to use their products.

Need to get a nice suburban or excursion and slap a 12" lift and some 42" tires on it. Generaly speaking, people watch out for vehicles that are the size of an elephant.

You don't have to use fluids from Mercedes. As long as what your putting in meets manufactures specs your fine. Mercedes puts Mobile One oil in their cars.

Parts for all high end cars from any manufacturer are more expensive. That is why the car cost more. Its not exclusive to Mercedes.

You know what, you're right, MB does have a list of specific approved synthetic oils for use with their cars, ie Mobile 1 Super Synth, etc..

You're still going to need 2+ gallons of oil for most their cars though, but it seems most nicer new cars are that way.
