Temp was over 50 today so I warshed (as they say around these parts) my 'bird. It was covered in road salt. I couldn't stand to look at her when she's that dirty. The guilt is just too much!
I cleaned my Camaro on the same day. It is the same color red, but it was white before with road salt probably like yours. mine did not come out as nice.
Thank goodness I do not have to deal with such an abomination. What a strange thing.
If we're so much as THREATENED with getting snow they plaster the roads with that crap. On yeah I was driving with my dad in his civic and we passed one such salt-spreading truck going the opposite direction. His hood and bumper got HAMMERED by salt chunks! I didn't check for any paint chips but if that were my 'bird I'd be pissed! Think about it- salt spreader truck doing 50mph in the opposite direction as us, also doing 50mph+... that salt is hitting his car at over 100mph! Apparently those trucks don't just "drop" the salt out the back, they use some gizmo to throw it across an area at least 50% wider than the lane, on each side. So oncoming traffic across the thin yellow lines gets peppered.

Common sense dictates that if you don't like your car getting "peppered" with it, you don't drive it. Lot of *****ing over road salt when it tends to be pretty beneficial.

That's the nice thing about being able to afford more than one vehicle. I understand that there's people that can't afford a second car, but I am so glad my 'bird can stay put up for the winter where its safe and protected from the salt, dirt, and harsh weather.

I wasn't *****ing about the salt itself, I was *****ing about the drivers that don't turn off their salt spray machines when passing oncoming traffic. Usually they do and this one didn't. Maybe you drive a beater (I don't know if you do) and don't give two ****s if you lose some paint but personally I don't enjoy the front of my car looking like it got blasted by a shotgun.

I can touch up the marks, not that salt really leaves any. But I've gotten more pitmarks and dings from driving in the summer. Its inherent of driving.
One thing that Chicago is good at is snow removal and laying salt, but sometimes you get blasted with it. Just deal with it, it serves a higher purpose than your cars paint. If not, buy another car.

I wouldn't be happy about losing paint no matter what car I'm driving or how it happens, no matter what the "higher purpose" may be. This is an f-body forum. If we were expected to not give a **** what our cars look like then f-bodies wouldn't exist.

If you're foolish enough to drive it during the winter it's obvious you don't care what it looks like. This is why I drive a 4x4 truck. The Firebird doesn't get driven in this crap, it's old. Just buy a beater, considering that myself.

So anyone who drives a car during the winter doesn't care if the paint gets chipped? That may be how you treat your cars, but that's not how most people treat theirs. Go key a few cars sitting at a stoplight during a Chicago winter. When they chase you with a tire iron, calmly state that they're driving during the winter and their paint should be of no concern. Enlighten them and bring them to their senses.

There's nothing I can do about paint chipping from asphalt, rock, sand, ice, or salt. I can fix it, buy a beater that I don't care what happens to it, or piss and moan about it. Either way it's gonna happen, unless I stop driving completely. Plenty of people have beaters for just this reason. They don't care if the paint chips or gets keyed, long as it has 4 wheels and an engine, they don't care.

I used to hate getting salted to...but realistically, if the guy had to shut his salter off for every passing car, your roads probably wouldn't be salted very well. Then you'd probably be b*tching about the guardrail/car you slid into (or someone else slid into you) because of the black ice.
I think we're doing a lot less salting now and have moved on to a deicer they spray on the roads.
I've never seen paint chips from salt, but I have seen some pretty f'd cars that were rear ended/t-boned because someone hit ice, couldn't stop and dusted the car infront of them.
Pardon the ignorance, but 'round here they just drop gravel. My car's black, and I drive it year-round through snow and ice, and I've never had any white residue from the roads. Its always just normal road grime... is the gravel something different? And its only at intersections too. But I live in a very rural neighborhood, I'm ~15 miles from the nearest "town"
About a week ago noticed my brake lights not working also Hazards not working. Installed new brake switch and still not working, checked fuses and what...
