That fifth wheel looks super far forward on your model. I'm curious though.. On all of our trucks and almost every one of our customers have us fab up some ramps to make it much easier hooking up to a trailer. It's welded on towards the back kinda as an extension of the incline that goes in front of the pintle hook. Do you know why that's not a standard factory piece? Btw, where's the pintle hook?
These trucks look designed almost strictly for 45 and 53 footers. Those tail lights wouldn't last very long, as I've seen mudflap brackets mounted in an even lower and forward position get destroyed by dolly legs on a trailer as soon as they take a turn.
I had a chance to talk to the project manager of the truck and ask him about the position of the fifth wheel. He said the wheelbase was shortened at some point during the process and it screwed up some of the geometry on this concept. The final truck would be coming with a bit longer wheelbase. The goal was to have a full 24" between the back of cab and the front of the trailer when hitched, with the trailer hanging about 4" over the platform on the back as there have been a lot of injuries reported of drivers falling off the deck plates between the trailer and plates. This would be accomplished by moving the hitch back a solid 10" or so. This would help the dolly leg issue as well, but you're right, things mounted directly behind the drive tires tend to get bunged up.
Only 24" between the cab and trailer? Lol, you probably already know quite a few drivers would have a tight squeeze back there. Are there any safety features implemented in case of a crash? It looks ideal that the window on the airshield could be kicked out in the event of a rollover.
