Hello, I'm Mike from Coastal NC. Got on this site to learn more about building my 3.8L 97 Firebird. This one is being built to run in the Chump Car Series. There are 70+ pages in the rule book about what I cannot do to this car. Does get a full cage, a trans swap from 4L60E to T5, brake upgrades etc. Chump Car is endurance racing. More to do with how many laps you can run in a specified amount of time than with how fast you can go. Gotta build this thing to live. So I will be bumping around in here to learn what I can to that end.
    Thanks

Welcome! Any pics of the car? You'll find plenty of info here on racing your car, and there are a few experienced racers here as well that I'm sure would be more than happy to help you out.

Not much to look at. Right now it is stripped and rolling on a chassis cart. Watervliet Huh. I've been coming up there every year for the last 6 or 7 to run in the Motor State Challenge. I've been time trialing for several years. The Chump Car deal is to get some close buddies into road racing. Know my buddy Scott Wahlstrom over at MSD?
      Thanks for the welcome.

I don't know Scott personally, but I know the name. I actually work at MotorState/Lane Automotive..lol. If you've been there for the Motorstate Challenge any of the last 2 or 3 years, you may have seen my car inthe parking lot there.

This is my ex Grand Am racecar. Built by Wheel2wheel for GM in 99.

The El Camino is what I run in The American Street Car series and just ran in the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational in Pahrump Nev. Built on a Schwartz chassis with an LS2.

id like to know about how you got into this type of racing. ive wanted to try and get into it for years (dating back to my v6 days) but never could get answers as to how to do so. i love drag racing but always thought it'd be more fun to build a circuit course type car.

current car- 95 Trans am- bolt ons, parked and collecting dust. why? because **** it

Oiling is going to be a major issue with the V6. If you're going to engage in an endurance contest better make sure about the oil getting to all the moving parts of your engine.

                  Oh, welcome to the board.

Thanks for the comments. vanbibber, start by running HPDEs with a group like NASA. They will start you in DE1. You can drive your DD with stock safety equipment. They will provide an instructor both on track and classroom. You will be on track with drivers with similar experience levels. And you will have the most fun ever in your car. Where it goes from there is up to you. I figured oil control to be a challenge. Does anyone make a RR pan for the 3.8? At SEMA I spoke to several manufacturers about this and no one made a pan for this purpose. My plan will be to modify the stock pan with trap doors and add an Accusump. Any suggestions appreciated.

                      Re: Introduction

Keeping the car cooling system in check is usually a bigger challenge than oil pressure.

I think the stock Y87 pan is baffled for racing.

Nice looking car,it was great to see them destroy other cars in the showroom stock series back in the 90's.
BTW you don't see too many roadracers with the TA wing as the Firebird/Formula hatch is lighter.

This shot was taken at Daytona during the 2007 24 hours. Before I bought it. It came to me pretty much as it was that day. I have made some changes in areas that were weak points. Strange S60 rear end, Spohn torque arm and panhard. Running UMI k member and CA's. It is a blast to drive. What is a Y87 pan and where can I get some info on it? I'm just before modifying the stock pan. Thanks Mike
