Yeah I agree with the list but they could of listed the 3800 II and III from 1995 to 2009 since their basically the same engine.

Buick's 3800 V6 has been winning Ward's Best Engine award since it came out in the late '60's.

I do hope GM brings back the engine.

It will never happen for one main reason..CAFE

It was a great durable engine.

Fuel economy is the game today and the 3800 is 70's technology with lots of bandaids through the years.

Smaller displacement and lighter engines with DI and mutiple cams for VVT rule today.

I know the 3800 is a popular engine but i think it would be a way more popular if it wasn't having to compete against the ls1 for the top Chevy engine.

I mean anyone who is moderately into cars has heard of the 2jz or the ls1, but I bet 5/10 guys out side the Chevy world wouldn't know what a 3800 is.

Not when they started the 3800. Although Pontiac, Chevrolet, Buick, etc may have been under the same GM banner, they all had their own engines for the longest time.

Nothing wrong with push rod technology. V8s still uses them. 3800 has kept up with modern technology. In the 80 thru 90s other engines were trying to catch up to it when it comes to power and reliability. If I remember correctly GM wanted to phase it out in 1995 that's why it wasn't upgraded anymore in favor of muktiple valves, but consumers demanded that it stays and so it did for a couple more years.

I can see this engine being all aluminum, DI, and running with more compression for higher HP. Besides, nothung beats a push rod for that awesome lowend torque.

I agree it works great for the LS but it's almost the last of the breed the Chrysler Hemi being the other pushrod throwback.

The HF V6 with displacements between 2.8L/ 3.6L is GM's direction now.

They won't turn back to the 3.8L

I disagree with the 2jz, toyota 1lr jumble of letters or anything regarding the luxury or performance only . How many of them were actually built? Are the reliable and take a lot of hp? Sure, but I bet that for every 1 2jz 200 amc 4.0's were built. The only reason you got a 2jz is when you had money to buy a nice RWD based luxury or performance car. How many of them actually ended up in "bad/rough" owners to really test them? Most people that own a supra know enough to change oil and if you ended up with a lexus derivitive you had the money to pay somebody to service it. Yeah they put them in larger RWD toyotas too but how many of them had 6 owners, got drove into snow drifts, ran with no oil for 20000 miles and sold worth a crap?

As far as commercially successful good US sold engines: LS, 3800, 4.0, honda 4 cylinder, Ford 6.9/7.3 IDI/powerstroke, ford 4.6's, list could go on. If it goes 250,000 regularly its good. In the 70's and before engines would be wore out with 100,000 on. There arent many bad engines built anymore. Even the "bad" 3v 4.6's that blow the spark plugs out sometimes arent bad.

Theres a difference between legendary and good IMO.
